A 1946 style PSA recounts 40 million drivers 140 million pedestrians and 3 million miles of highways as a high risk game of life and death. It cites 33,900 killed and 1,300,000 injured, blaming odds taken and risk unassessed. The message urges care to avoid losing life on the road.
National Hospital Day will be observed Monday May 12 in Iowa and nationwide with open houses at Des Moines and Knoxville VA hospitals. The event honors Florence Nightingale on her 127th birthday and invites public tours of wards rooms dining and therapy departments to see care for about 2200 hospitalized veterans.

L S Cox drove to Colfax Monday and returned with his wife, who has improved after sanitarium treatments. they stopped briefly at Irma Wilkinson’s home on the way.
Mr and Mrs Thomas Smiley of Grinnell and Dr W A Johnson joined a Hardin County Medical Society meeting in Iowa Falls last Thursday evening. Mr and Mrs A R Idso traveled to Marshalltown on Sunday for the fiftieth anniversary celebration of the Norwegian Lutheran church there.
Mrs M W Ries and daughter Genevieve attended a pianoforte recital by Ardith Ries in Grinnell. Mother's Day guests at the Barhite home marked a twelfth wedding anniversary for Mr and Mrs Burl Barhite with many relatives visiting from Iowa Falls Dows Eldora and Waterloo for a Sunday gathering and family visits.
Mrs Mary Heslop and family visited Wilbur Winter in Ames when a pretend fire drill lit the night sky across the river. A bonfire near the bridge tricked townsfolk into a loud alarm as autos flocked in from the countryside. The Alden Loyalty and Defense League drill department is now organized with 23 recruits joining Tuesday and more expected Friday.
