Club Women Organize May Cleanup Week in Alden

The Library Reading Circle and Stall this Circle urge Alden residents to cooperate May 8 to 13 for cleanup. They call for cleaning basements attics yards and alleys removing rubbish and preventing fires. Scouts and students are invited to assist this community effort.

Vandalism Hits City Street Lights Across Iowa Falls

On Friday night wires of Commonwealth Light and Power were cut at 100 street intersections in Iowa Falls. The act is estimated to cost at least 86500 to replace, with a strong clue and possible arrests to follow.

Library Notes Highlights From Last Week

About forty children gathered at the library on Wednesday evening to hear stories told by Miss Davis. The Agricultural Year Book appears as a new public document. Cleanup Day was observed on Thursday with women working to clean and beautify the library.

Woman Talks Suffrage At Methodist Church

Dr Effie McCollum Jones spoke on equal suffrage at the Alden Methodist church bringing a logical, measured lecture to a filled audience. The program included musical numbers and a reception of thanks followed by a late train departure for Jows Falls.

Easy Money for Fuller Sells Sixteen Calves for 75.10 Each

George Fuller sold sixteen 13 month Hereford calves to Will Burton for 1171.60 with price per pound nine cents. The calves average 76.10 per head and one brought 100.80. Burton will ship the calves to Chicago market as baby beef.

Travel Letter from W G Muhleman to Aiden Friends

In a Wheeling to Alden correspondence dated April 29 1916 W G Muhleman recounts trips from Washington to Baltimore Harrisburg Gettysburg Pittsburgh and Wheeling. He notes his brother’s fall injuries and recent spiritual conversion and hopes to preach and baptize before returning home to Alden.

Last Feeding of Season by Domestic Science Club

The Domestic Science Club held its final meeting of the season last Friday at Mrs. A. R. Idso’s home. Officers elected for the next term were Mrs. E. B. Pritchard as chairman and Mrs. A. R. Idea as secretary and treasurer. Fifty-five members and guests attended the 7 pm dinner, served by Misses Nellie Bushman Gladys Benshoof Fern Wolf and Blanche Pritchard, followed by vocal solos from Miss Cora Haeussier and Miss Lillian Stevens and a piano duet by Miss Blanche Pritchard and Miss Nellie Boshman.

Alden's Churches Sees 80 Attend Communion Service

The church reports strong turnout of about 80 for last Sunday's Communion service despite bad weather. A meeting for all youth to discuss joining a Christian Endeavor Society is planned for next Sunday at 7 o'clock, with no obligation to join. Evening services shift to 8 o'clock starting next Sunday.

Best Iowa corn bushel sells for a dollar per ear

The Iowa best bushel of corn was bought by The Iowa Farmer at Des Moines and retailed for one dollar an ear to improve breeding. Records will track this prize, with results watched closely. Progeny of the prize bushel are expected to yield interesting data for farmers in the coming year or two.
