Death of Mrs. Jay Fish at Alden and family history

Carrie E. Oler, born June 27, 1863 in Dewitt Scott County, died April 28 1918 in Millworth hospital Iowa Falls at 54.10.1. She married Christian Boyer in 1887 and moved to Town in 1890 where he died in 1908. She later wed Jay Fish in 1911 and moved to Alden in 1917. She leaves a husband son Guy and siblings, with a large circle of friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the family home west of Alden conducted by Rev. W. B. Northrop and interment in Alden cemetery.

First Congregationalism Lesson At Midweek Meeting

Walter Riley of Madeira Minnesota and his four brothers in service share a letter to his uncle W. Benshoof dated April 20 1918. He describes army life at Camp Custer Michigan and Camp Dodge memories, mentioning rationing and upcoming photos, expressing the boy’s view of army life as great if it doesn’t weaken him.

Red Cross Meeting Promotes Civilian Relief Effort

Will King of Hub speaks at Methodist church Friday May 3 as part of a Red Cross patriotic gathering with community singing and free admission. The Red Cross board names Civilian Relief chairmen across town districts and urges volunteers to pick up blanks recording soldiers from each district for record keeping. A Hyland club donation of five dollars and urgent appeals for workers are noted along with a call for mothers sisters and friends to join at the Red Cross sign and help return soldiers home safely.

Local Memorial Seeks Quota for Camp Dodge Training

Last Monday another quota left the county for Camp Dodge to train for Uncle Sam's army. A Sunday farewell at Eldora’s opera house featured a patriotic service led by Rev. Smith of Grundy Center. The list includes Lee R. Shaner and many others from nearby towns and states. An exemption board has prepared May quota names to be sent to Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, with about eighteen to twenty chosen from thirty.

Epworth League Juniors Host Reception and Scout Troop Formed

The Epworth League junior chapter hosted a reception for parents and church officials with seventy attendees. A program of songs and games followed in the basement. A Scout troop formed Monday evening with eighteen boys enrolled. leadership roles named. Floyd Allen and Roy Garbrandt visited Dave Allen’s home last week.
