Tornado Toll and New Weather Rattle Southern States

Massive tornadoes across five southern states killed over 300 people, with Alabama hardest hit at 246 dead. Georgia 35, Tennessee 18, South Carolina and Kentucky two each. Many injured, homeless as communications failed. National Guard deployed, tents, blankets, food distributed, Red Cross aiding, and relief drives urged by Gov. Miller. Separately, U.S. House clashes over a sales tax provision and a proposal to raise estate taxes on the wealthy.

Senate Debates Ten Percent Cut in 124 Million Budget

VER notes a Senate bloc dubbed ten per centers led by McKellar of Tennessee pushing government economy. On Tuesday the Senate voted 50 to 29 to send back the state justice labor and commerce bill for a mandatory ten percent cut, with Chairman Jones calling it a mandate for broader cuts. McKellar says savings could reach at least 25 million, while debt interest and veterans payments exceeding 1 billion are to be exempt.

Prohibition Fight Moves Toward Senate Record Vote

Senator Tydings of Maryland offered a motion to discharge the judiciary committee from further consideration of resolutions on repeal or amendment of the eighteenth amendment. He presented a petition signed by twenty four members and delayed pressing the motion until March 31 to allow more signers. Eleven Democrats and twelve Republicans joined, with Senator Watson signing while not committing to a wet position.

Ireland plans to abolish oath of allegiance in parliament

W Dulantry in London informs J H Thomas that President de Valera intends to abolish the oath of allegiance to King George used by Irish parliament members. Thomas reports to Buckingham Palace, then to the Commons, insisting Britain will not permit abolition and will keep the land annuities stance. Annuities total about 10.15 million dollars with Ireland owing Britain 380 million.

Hitler barred from air talks as Germany braces for vote

DOLF HITLER faced limited chances to win the presidency against Paul von Hindenburg. He was refused broadcasting access and thirty Nazi publications were banned for endangering the republic by attacks on the government. Hitler had denounced police raids on Nazi offices. Despite tension, Hindenburg remained favored to win the runoff.

Elsewhere in the Middle West the anti Hoover Republicans were more active. In Illinois they were preparing to put up slates of candidates for delegates who will oppose the candidacy of Mr Hoover or of any man who is not in favor of repeal of the Eighteenth amendment and of the reduction of cost of government so as to lower taxes. The leadership of this group, especially in Chicago, however, is not of a character to enhance their chances of success.

Dispatch from Washington reports the La Follettes aim to enter Senator George W Norris of Nebraska in the Wisconsin Republican primaries on April 5.
