Price Administrator Chester Bowles testified before the senate banking committee seeking a one year extension of the OPA with continued powers to restrain prices through subsidies and wartime controls. OPA considered lifting cattle subsidies by 30 cents to curb a fall market while lowering hog subsidies, aiming to balance feed costs and production during the spring and summer. In Europe Allied forces pressed toward Rome after a Cassino assault, with heavy bombing and continued rail and industrial disruption as Nazi defenses fought to slow the advance.
