Wedding of Miss Margaret Laird and Raymond Haydock

Miss Margaret Laird and Raymond Haydock wed on Sunday February 19 at 1 o clock at the Laird home. Rev W G Muhleman presided over the ceremony with Doris Colbernaon singing I Love You Truly. Attendants were Dorothy Haydock and Denzel Laird with a three course dinner following. The couple will reside on the Laird farm north of town after a short wedding trip.

Junior League baseball benefit Friday by Alden Legion

The Alden American Legion post sponsors a Friday benefit double header featuring Alden alumni and high school teams. High school squads have won recent meetings, but alumni hope to reverse the count. Charles Saunders Guilty in Nighttime Burglary Case

A Eldora jury found Charles Strausser guilty of breaking and entering in the night and Judge Garfield set sentencing for this afternoon. The charge stemmed from an attempted auto theft at John Campbell’s Iowa Falls garage where Mrs. Campbell’s dog halted the burglar.

Marie Trutza to Represent Alden in Spelling Contest

Hardin county spelling contest set for Saturday at 1 30 PM in Iowa Falls high school auditorium. County winner advances to the state spelling bee in Des Moines on April 22 with the Des Moines Register covering travel and expenses. Ruth Marie Trutza will represent Alden school in the county contest at Iowa Falls.

Alden Club to Join Junior Baseball League

The county American Legion sponsors a junior baseball league for the county championship. Harold Hauser of B Dora is named chairman. Four teams are set in Alden Eldora Hubbard Union with four more under consideration in Ackley Iowa Falls Radcliffe and the state training school. Games follow American Legion rules for under 17 players. Interested boys should contact their nearest Legion post. Players from across the county will form a team to compete against other counties, adopting the county's best clocked team name.

Alden Boys and Girls Triumph in Blairsburg Games

In Blairsburg, Alden boys won 25-23 behind a steady lead through the game, Sharar leading with 13 points and Fowler scoring 13 for Blairsburg. Alden girls dominated 32-4, with all twelve players seeing action and Duncan, Orpin, Musson, and BE Olsen each contributing. Grundy Center edged Alden 36-32 in the boys sectional opener, with Sharar again top-scoring for Alden at 8 as they trailed by four at halftime.

Mrs. Dorothy Roberts Weds Arlan Downing at Little Brown Church

Mrs Dorothy Darrah Roberts of Lee township and Arlan Downing of north of Alden married at the Little Brown church in Nashua. Mrs Downing, daughter of John H Darrah, active in Lee community projects. Downing, a Lee township farmer, will live on his farm and be at home after March 1.

Clever Climbers 4-H Club Holds All Day Meeting

The Clever Climbers 4-H girls met at leader Mrs. Elmer Babcock's home on February 18 for an all day session. Thirteen members plus visitors made a buttonhole during a sewing demonstration, discussed conservation and record books, heard talks on becoming a good conversationalist and posture, and viewed a sewing machine attachment demonstration by Mrs. Gibbs of Marshalltown. The afternoon focused on record books and repair kits. next meeting is March 4 with the prompt roll call “One Thing I Have Learned in 4-H Work.”

The Methodist church hosted its annual father and son banquet on Tuesday night in the church basement with 196 attending a F. E. F. prepared dinner. Superintendent Von Krog of Eldora’s boys training school was absent. Mr. Hanson substituted, sharing school insights. C. R. Bradshaw acted as toastmaster while Vernon Rottler led pop songs and Rev. W. J. Suckaw gave the invocation.

Women Behind Milk Project in Alden Initiative

Women of Alden again sponsor a milk furnishing project. A list of 89 names was given to Mr. Greenwood. those not on the list may join the milk call by contacting Jim Idso and notifying Superintendent Greenwood. Free milk for listed children. others pay the milkman. Parents seeking free milk should contact Mrs. Winter and Mrs. Johnson.

Sunday School Picnic and Board Meeting At The Church

Officers and teachers of the Methodist Sunday School enjoyed a church basement picnic dinner after services. A meeting of the Sunday School board followed to discuss various matters. Attendance was smaller than expected due to sickness, but the event was profitable and friendly.

Saintly Pin Causes Des Moines Medical Consult

Mr and Mrs Joe Hankom reported their one year old son Ronald swallowed a safety pin yesterday morning. The pin lodged in the throat but moved into the stomach during examination. Dr W A Johnson accompanied the parents to a specialist in Des Moines. Physicians deem there will be no ill effects from the incident.

By noon today four candidates have filed for the two Alden school board directorships to be decided at the March 12 election. Incumbents M. W. Ries and W. C. Granton filed early this week the secretary reports, while Mrs. John Kemp and Jarmest Smith submitted petitions Tuesday.

Blizzard Hits Alden Iowa Strands Traffic and Schools

A powerful blizzard struck Alden Iowa last Monday night, the worst since 1936. By Tuesday morning almost 18 inches of snow covered the ground with drifting winds that blocked roads and halted business. Schools, including rural ones, were closed and several routes were impassable. Cleanup began with plows clearing streets while temperatures stayed above zero and officials forecast warmer weather. The heavy snowfall brings needed moisture after a dry season.
