The letter warns funds may not cover the full twenty five mill homestead credit and notes rising homestead numbers. The year saw REA work start in 1987 with 74 miles of lines built and March 1938 energizing. By year end miles energized served 240 customers, with 151 more miles planned and current expected this month to reach 274 miles serving about 600 customers. The year 1988 had an extremely long wet warm growing season from mid March to Oct. Rainfall reached 82.16 inches over seven months. excess heat near a thousand degrees. December averaged 26.4 F, 4 above normal, with 0.88 inches of rain and 4.2 inches of snow. Clear to cloudy days numbered 8, 11, and 12 respectively. C H Gilbert notes the warmest Dec day was Dec 3 at 46 F and the coldest was Jan 27 or 28 at 7 below.

Lee Silvest Funeral Held Last Monday at Buckeye
Albert Lee Silvest, aged 54, longtime Ellis township resident, died December 30 1938 at his Buckeye home after two marriages and eight children. He is survived by his wife Tillie Mary Brocka and six children, plus five half siblings. Funeral services were at Peace Evangelical and Reformed church Buckeye with Rev Roy Eilers officiating. Burial in Towa Falls cemetery.

C C Whipple, once of Alden, died December 24 at his Hurdsfield North Dakota home from old age. He was 86, born October 16 1852 in Malone New York. He lived in the locality from 1877 to 1902, later building a residence now owned by Ired Clark.
