Allied Air Bombers Hit Wewak and Other Fronts In Pacific

U S Liberator bombers attacked the big base at Wewak to cut supply lines feeding Japanese troops in the south while Australian units moved through jungle along New Guinea’s northeast coast to isolate inland outposts. In Bougainville, U S forces gained little as Japanese fortifications held. The Gilbert Islands saw the bloodiest action with 3 722 American casualties and 5 700 Japanese losses, outpacing Guadalcanal and Salerno figures. 4 H: Young producers at the national 4H congress in Chicago reported top earners and big stock sales plus war bond activity. Agricultural goals show large increases in fat and oil production, meat output, and livestock, with hog prices pressured by winter marketing congestion and 100 000 head unsold at markets.

War Material on Sale After War Proposals Stressed

Government sale of surplus war material is under consideration with bids requested for mechanics tools airplane parts and other items. Secretary Jesse Jones cautioned against aiding monopolies and urged balanced distribution with civilian needs to be met alongside military demand. The War Production Board aims to boost 1944 stove output and improve distribution to retailers while maintaining limited production.

Fairs reopen and crowds grow as war-era bans lift

Delegates at the Chicago convention of the Association of District and County Fairs from 22 states resolved to reopen big shows this year. Fairs reported larger crowds and higher earnings than in years past despite wartime constraints. College football attendance fell 18.4 percent from 1942 across 57 institutions, with the South hardest hit and the East least affected. A 19 percent drop also appears when comparing 1942 to 1941 figures.

Spruce up ironing by sprinkling clothes with a clean whisk broom or a bottle with a perforated top. If curtains droop, a dip in ecru dye helps.
