The publisher announces a price rise to $2.00 per year beginning October 1 due to higher costs for materials and postage. Renewals before October 1 remain at $1.60, with single wrappers requiring cash in advance. The notice also covers school tuition, teacher assignments, and plans for returning soldiers and local education.
The Evangelical Emmanuel church holds its annual mission festival at Alden Park next Sunday with a full day program. Morning events include invocations, prayers, sermons by Rev Barth and Rev T. E. Hoon, songs, and audience participation. afternoon features services led by Rev Hoon and Rev Northrop, and a picnic dinner. evening services conclude with prayers, sermons by Rev Wuebben and Rev Barth, songs, and a final benediction. Attendees are asked to bring song books and an offering for the church mission fund.
Alden public schools will open Monday morning with classes organized and textbooks secured on the first day. The program aims to complete the routine by Tuesday morning. Principal My Miller has been at the office for a week and will meet new pupils on Friday and Saturday to assist.
The Hardin County Pioneer association will hold its annual meeting on Sunday September 1 1918 in E E Elerding s grove not Waldo s grove as announced. The program lists morning songs prayers scripture reading and memorials with Rev H F Risse and B Fitzgerald, noon dinner, afternoon performances by Hughes Male Quartet Miss Vernelle King Aymer D Davis readings duets and solos, and an officers and committees announcement. Everyone is invited to attend.
The Ben Franklin club of county newspaper men met in Eldora on Friday for shop talk then elected officers: President W. S. Needham Eldora Ledger Vice president T. Deal Hubbard Review Secretary treasurer G. C. Sheaffer Alden Times Visiting editors joined a luncheon at the Hotel Winchester. ads in the Times urged reading.
Roy Hurst and Winifred Sullivan wed last Sunday evening at the Congregational parsonage in Iowa Falls, a surprise to Alden residents. The couple left for Minnesota and Minnesota visits, then hinted at camouflaged plans before revelation. They are staying with the bride’s sister near Alden and plan to search for a farm home.
Alden residents boast of electrolier installation while the Alden correspondent to the Town Falls Citizen argues the new lights are hardly better than the old. Critics note the nearly fifteen hundred dollars spent by local businessmen and question the value of the expenditure.

R W Byrdsall of Dows visited Alden last Friday. Banks in Hardin county will discard overdrafts starting next month under a state and federal banking department order and a county banking institutions agreement. The move aligns with similar actions nationwide to equalize overdraft handling.
Mrs J N Birdsall is appointed to replace the former recorder and will build a permanent card index of all soldiers who left Alden Iowa. About ninety soldiers are listed with names and addresses, and the Belgians relief effort has delivered about 400 pounds of clothing. July and August work totals include pajamas, robes, underwear, coats, and knitting shipments to chapter headquarters.
In Justice Furry's court Constable Barrett turned over Adolph Dellke to Sheriff Max Gherk at Eldora Monday afternoon. Dellke, age estimated between sixteen and twenty, was found near Fred Traks home chewing eggs with shells. The youth was charged with vagrancy. a physician classified him as afflicted with a loathsome disease, posing a contagion risk. Officials seek to identify his origin and plan to ship him back to his presumed caretakers.
A letter from East Poultney Vermont dated August 21 thanks the Times for its coverage. The writer notes good crops with corn lagging, milk at 8.15 per hundred, eggs 48 cents a dozen, potatoes at 2.46, and 4 000 acres short in New England. He mentions Alden, Hawkeyes, and old friends, and encloses funds for land taxes while wishing success ahead.
