Registration Day Saturday for 21 Year Old Males

A proclamation requires all males who have turned 21 since the second ete to register for military service. The notice specifies registration occurs next Saturday.

Claim of Blanche A Brown Seeks One Third of Hastings Estate

A petition filed in El Dora district court claims Blanche A Brown and the late Geo W Hastings formed an al marriage like agreement in 1895, she alleging they lived as husband and wife and she is entitled to one third of Hastings property. Hastings died in San Diego, executors named W E Rathbone and S E Lathrop. A separate filing by Geo D Hastings, alleging illegitimacy, seeks a share against the executors. Major portion of Hastings estate was left to a children's orphanage in Council Bluffs.

Boys in hospital at Camp Forest Ga and Alden boys

Henry Trasks of Camp Forest Ga has just left hospital after an operation to relieve a long standing trouble. A letter from Henry will appear next week as it arrived too late for this issue. Raymond Olson of Alden is now in the hospital for a stomach trouble but is reported to be recovering and expected to be out soon.

Alden boys to receive Times with service roster

Soldier boys of Alden will continue to receive the Times as $100.50 was raised to pay all subscriptions. A complete roster of local service members and addresses will be published in the next issue. Readers urged to report errors or changes to keep the list accurate and current.

Soldier boys write from Camp Merritt a long travel tale

A June 1918 diary from a Soldier Boy recounts a cross country trip from Camp Custer Michigan to Camp Merritt New Jersey. He notes stops in Jackson City Detroit Windsor Comber Muirkirk Rodney Iowa St Thomas Springfield Cornell Town Center Niagara Falls Rochester and Syracuse with vivid impressions of Canadian farms, fences, patriotism, weather, and crop conditions. He describes trains, crossings, and towns along the way and ends noting rough country from Rochester to Kingston.

Aged Father Dies in California Home

A. Van Riper, nearly 86, died suddenly at his Turlock California home, likely from heart trouble, while living with memories of Alden and area. Survived by three daughters and one son including Judson Van Riper and Mrs. N. B. Ivans of Marshalltown and Mrs. M. L. Smith and Mrs. B. G. Wood of Alden. Funeral under G. A. R. auspices. interment in Turlock Cemetery.

Tordoff Sells 80 Acre Farm West of Town

Henry Tordoff disposed of his 80 acre farm west of town to Everett Connelly who is farming the Kemp farm. Connelly expects to move onto the farm next spring.

Ellis Epworth League and Alden Junior League reports praised. Dist Superintendent commended. A resolution to extend Rev Hoon's pastorate unanimously passed. Alden officers listed. Enoch Warman chosen lay delegate to Estherville conference. Next services to follow. Dr Bond urged action as fall approaches and praised the sacrifices of local servicemen.

Berlin Fortified Monster Guns Describe Labyrinth of Defenses

John Erickson of Walnut Illinois, a Sweden native and former Motla gun works technician, testifies Berlin is surrounded by two concentric gun rings buried in pits 40 to 50 feet deep. Guns range 22 to 42 inches in diameter, many exceed 200 feet in length, with granite foundations seven feet deep. A grass covered roofed layer hides the emplacement and electricity controls the weapons.
