Obituary of the aged mother of Gal Warne

Mrs Alice Warne, aged mother of Gal Warne, died at her daughter’s home in Ordway South Dakota. Born November 7 1859 in Metamora Ind she became wife of W H Warne in Arcola Illinois in 1879. She lived on farms near Arcola Tuscola and later Iowa then resided with daughter Beulah Ellenbecker in Ordway where she passed away Sunday night. Survived by three sons Calvin Alden IA John Fargo ND Ervin and daughter Beulah Ellenbecker, plus brother John C Jones and several step and half siblings.

Damage suit over fatal shooting near Charles City

Melvin Stoecker, 18, was killed by a deputy sheriff’s bullet on May 19 while returning home with a companion. His father, administrator, files a $25,000 damages suit in Floyd County District Court against deputy Ralph Cutler and others, alleging improper conduct and wrongful death.

Clothing clubs chosen for Hardin county state fair contest

The Willing Sewers, Farm Bureau and Four-H Club from Jackson township were selected in Fi dora during tryouts to represent Hardin county at the State Fair. Eight clubs competed judged by Florence Packman of Ames. tie between Urza Hauser and Helen Hauser of Whitten and Ruth Chaney and Ruth Gast of Jackson. Both teams proceed to Des Moines.

Burglaries Hit Blairsburg Town Stores

Robbers visited Blairsburg last Friday morning entering nearly every store. Cash was the target with $78.34 taken from the post office, about $7 from the pool hall, small change from McComb Motor Co, $2 from Cooper Grocery and Cream Station, and about $10 from Gardner Hardware. Merryman Drug Store yielded no money. Blairsburg Implement Co reported no losses.

Scotch Highlanders Band Draws Large Crowd in Alden

The Scotch Highlanders gave a popular program last Friday at the Alden ball park under the local American Legion. More than a thousand attended, receipts totaling 691.50 after a 400 guarantee and expenses. The show featured musical and vocal acts and drew fans from nearby towns including Iowa Falls HL hjor a Williams Buckeye Dows and others. Mrs J N Moon Miss Georgia Moon and Miss Eleanor Mortis of Ashland Nebraska visited the Sheaffer home after attending the event.

County Board of Education Met Last Week

The Hardin county board of education met with the county superintendent of schools last Monday to review rural school improvements. They plan continued visits to rural schools to assess benefits from prior recommendations, including expanding libraries with readers for lower grades and providing primary teaching equipment.

Underground Lake in Glenwood Cave Reopens for boating

Ancient underground lake in Glenwood township, part of Glenwood cave, is being made accessible again with widened opening and a boat built for exploration. The Decorah Journal notes the lake spans 1300 feet with a 1100 foot extension beyond, and nearby wells and wind gusts hint at distant cave connections. Glenwood Springs lies about a mile from the cave entrance.

Mrs. Maud Watson, who went to San Bennamino, California, months ago, is expected to arrive in Alien today for a visit with her son L. A. Watson and other relatives and friends.

Former Resident John Watson Buried in Alden Area

Funeral services for John Watson a former resident southwest of Alden were held last Tuesday at 2 pm from John Laird's home conducted by Rev W L Brean. Interment was in Alden cemetery beside his wife. He was born January 13 1829 in Lane shire England and died August 12 1928 in Forest City Iowa at age 94 years 6 months 29 days. He came to this country in 1851 lived in Wisconsin moved to a farm near Alden 1867 then Williams 18 years later Webster City four years then with daughters near Forest City until death. He leaves a son and three daughters and two surviving half sisters. A large attendance from distant places.

Two million hogs have been received at the Sioux City market this year marking a historic high, with a gain of 885,000 hogs over the same period last year and a 67 percent increase. The report notes concurrent names and places including Hebron and Bet family references in North Dakota.

The Harding County Pioneer Association holds its annual meeting Sunday, August 19, near Eldora at Eterling prove southwest of town. Programs begin 9:30 A.M. with songs, scripture, readings, and performances by local quartets and choirs. Hon. J. B. Weaver of Des Moines delivers the address after noon dinner at 1:30 P.M. The event features multiple musical numbers, readings, and a closing hymn.

Mayor Edwards and Councilman Urmson left Tuesday for Ottumwa to attend the annual meeting of the League of Municipalities of Iowa. Alden is identified with the organization and Messrs. Edwards and Urmson are the delegates from this precinct. The sessions will open today.

Hardin County Fair Opens With Countywide Talent

Premium lists announce the Hardin county fair to run September 4 to 7 at Eldora with livestock exhibits and county-based events. Iowa Falls Ackley and Eldora bands lead daily programs, horse races and horseshoe events highlight the agenda, and admission is 50 cents for adults with 25 cents for ages nine to fifteen.
