Two wartime letters from Burl Barhite and another Marine recruit describe life at Quantico and Camp Pike in 1918. They detail sharpshooter progress, rough meals, drills, and travel to new posts, noting heat, crowded barracks, and mail arrivals while awaiting further orders and a move toward Des Moines.
The Iowa Falls council granted an electric light company rate increases effective July 1 after initial council resistance. The new charges raise lighting to 15 cents per kilowatt hour beyond 50 kWh and 3 cents per kWh for power, with higher rates of 10, 8, and 4 cents per kWh. Alden may follow, needing council action. Mayor Hilinger was asked to convene a meeting to align Alden with Falls rates. The company cites higher fuel and labor costs as justification.
The Sells Floto circus comes to Iowa Falls next Wednesday with two performances, afternoon and evening. The program opens with America and ends with the Goddess of Liberty welcoming victorious Sammies, featuring a notable menagerie and a two mile street parade.
Dr. E Babcock of Greenfield and Rev McClung of Creston paused Monday with Mrs Luella Babcock en route to the state Baptist assembly in Town Falls. Dr Babcock returned Tuesday for a brief visit with his mother.
A meeting of the price interpreting committee in Iowa Falls, with Mr. Orrick of the U S food administration present, announced tighter sugar controls for canning and a six pound monthly flour allowance per person, plus extra thresher allowances. William M. Watson of Wareham Dorset thanks the Alden Times for issues received while stationed in England during July 1918. He notes Independence Day was celebrated as a holiday and expresses pride in the stars and stripes as he enjoyed a seaside Fourth of July.
Pastor B. W. Northrop notes many were absent last Sunday as services resumed. No evening service for several Sundays due to heat. congregation urged to attend morning worship and advertise in the Times.
Mrs. D. McPherson, nearly housebound after a six year paralysis, died yesterday at her daughter Mrs. Geos Groner's home. Funeral plans await distant relatives, likely Saturday. Mr. Lee Smith died last evening at his Alden home after months with neck cancer. Funeral at 2 pm tomorrow from the home, interment in Alden cemetery. obituary to appear next issue.
Beardsley of Kirksville Missouri and Pearl Sprinkell of Vincennes Indiana were married last Saturday at the Baptist parsonage with Rev. Stanley officiating. The couple, who kept the wedding quiet until Mr Beardsley’s arrival, traveled to Eldora then returned to Town Falls for their honeymoon and now reside in Kirksville. The bride’s Alden friends wish them long wedded happiness.
The government controlled railroad failed to deliver the paper from Sioux City on Friday causing a one day delay and a half size issue. The Times apologizes and says it will arrange changes to prevent recurrence.
