Eight thousand visitors cram into Oocorro for the fair opening. Enthusiastic crowd fills the streets with a mile and a half parade featuring a lively West show atmosphere and high expectations for the carnival weekend.
Governor George Curry spoke in Socorro county urging admission as a state. He praised the crowd, growth, and unity, noting New Mexico's contribution in wars and promising to push for statehood while meeting with locals and visiting others in the territory. The opening fair day featured a parade, sports, bronco busting, and strong community support.
Large Albuquerque crowd expected to travel to Socorro today for the fair. Indications last night show fair officers will be joined by several hundred people spending the day visiting booths and exhibits.
