Minnesota and Michigan faced snow storms yesterday while reports from across the nation touched on a variety of events. Villard and Gould reportedly met, Genanco’s statue was unveiled, and a Denver jury handed manslaughter verdicts.
Chatham Virginia September 28 three young negroes Lawney Younger Robin King and Isaac Evans were hanged for the murder of William Shepherd. The private execution drew about fifteen witnesses as a detachment of Pittsylvania guards stood watch. Younger proclaimed innocence. King and Evans also denied guilt.
Louisville Sept 28 The National Colored Executive Committee met and elected W A Wiedger of Georgia as chair and George W Arnold of Virginia as secretary to carry out convention principles. Philadelphia Sept 28 Judge Hoadley Democratic nominee for Ohio governor left for Cleveland noting improved health. Guaymas Mexico Sept 2 Fever wanes with eight deaths since the 24th and few new cases. other points report mild illness.
Early this morning the boiler of steamer J S Hobin son exploded at Westerloe street, killing apt. Gus Warner and trenaen Wm Cleary. Engineer Fred Vensiar was badly hurt after being blown into the water. Deck hands Win Durand Melville Ryan and Mich ard Y Vansandt were injured. Capt Robinser of Hattie Betts and Cora wreck further damaged.
Three masked men robbed an east bound Wabash express near Peru at dawn, binding Express Messenger Loomis and stealing $15,000 and valuables. Loomis was later released as the train reached Peru. no clue to the culprits.
An express messenger on the Watoush railroad was overpowered and robbed between Roann and Peru. Six masked men boarded after Laketon and gagged the messenger, with about 1000 dollars taken. Two suspicious men were arrested at Logansport in connection with the case.
Fort Smith Arkansas dispatch reports Deputy United States Marshal Addison Beck and Deputy Merrill were killed while attempting to arrest whisky peddlers John Bark and Cherokee John Metack between Childers station and Wetber's Falls. Beck was an old officer, Merrill 22, both shot and beaten with revolvers. Dark escaped.
Galveston reports a Texas editor says Coleman county faces a flood of fence cutting with business paralyzed. A letter requests Governor Ireland urge action as five miles of Mrs Day's fence were cut. Gov. Ireland offers rewards for fence cutters and related law violations including sheep maltreatment in Hamilton county.
In Littleton Colorado this afternoon a portable steam threshing engine fell several feet from a bridge on the Denver ditch as workers crossed it. The engineer was badly burned and his prognosis is doubtful. In Pittsburg Virginia John Jarrett, former president of the Amalgamated Association, becomes general managing agent for the American Iron and Tin Association to push tariff support.
