Sam Whit a colored peddler of hot tamales assaulted his wife then beat her with a flat tree causing a head wound. A warrant issued for his arrest sent him fleeing as a tense colored population threatens lynching if sheriff officers capture him in Raton New Mexico.
The War Department favors General Frederick Punston to command in Cuba if troops sail there. Brigadier Generals Thomas H. Barry and William P. Duvall, after inspecting German maneuvers in Europe, may lead as senior aides and are set to sail by September 29 but could be recalled sooner due to Cuba’s acute situation. Taft and Bacon report to Roosevelt as presidential contact and Cuba pacification efforts proceed.
Survivors floated fourteen miles downriver after the Rock Island train fell into the Cimarron near Kingfisher Oklahoma. Officials reported missing and injured passengers including a mail clerk and a circus bill poster, with no bodies recovered. A bottle found downstream carried a plea from a presumed trapped survivor amid swollen streams and damaged bridges.
Passengers aboard a London to Greetham line Seatel Express were killed and many injured when the engine and several carriages derailed near Grau i. The train reportedly failed to stop at Greetham before the bridge collapse. Rescue operations ongoing.

Jerome Curry of Topeka Kansas shot his wife then killed himself in a domestic dispute at the Central Saah and Dou company. James Farley a 40 year old contractor dies after drinking carbolic acid at a local drug store, grieving over his wife’s recent death.
A touring car owned by John H. Springer, lessee of the Grand Opera House, was crushed between two street cars at Broadway and Thirty-fifth Street. Springer and his family escaped serious injury though bruised. the chauffeur also sustained shock and minor injuries.
William J. Bryan spoke to about 1,000 students at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. He praised the prayerful opening, urged Christian citizenship, criticized Republican platform choices, and defended public ownership of railroads while promising to continue his speaking tour to Georgia.
The preliminary hearing for Thomas Repinota and Elfonso Martines plus several other Mexicans charged with conspiracy against a friend, power, and violation of neutrality laws concluded. They were bound over to the federal grand jury with bonds set at 500 dollars. Letters alleged to be from RB Flores Magon described a plan to seize the Mexican customs house at Auga Punta and move toward Canatea, and an attack on Col WC Greene's Cananea store was discussed.
