New Haven, Sept. 4. Professor William H. Brewer of Yale rebutted Chicago professors and others denying Cook’s North Pole discovery. He argued their statements lack basis, citing a plausible timing dash and Cook’s detailed plan, and praised Cook’s honesty and scientific contribution.
Utica New York September 4 The question of who owns the North Pole after Dr Cook’s discovery drew an answer from Vice President James B Sherman who asserted The United States owns it He said there is no commercial value in the discovery to the United States only sentimental value and a supreme honor for the nation to have made it
New York reports that Rear Admiral Melville remains unconvinced by Dr. Cook's claim to have reached the North Pole. Ralph W. Shainwald of the Arctic Club sent Copenhagen greetings affirming Cook's message while Melville doubts the discovery and questions Cook's statements and methods.
The Sunday Observer says whether Dr. Cook reached the pole or not, he will receive a hearty welcome and be enrolled among the world’s resolute explorers. It calls for a properly equipped expedition to verify his work with Peary possibly leading the effort.
Portland Maine September reports Mrs Cook wife of Arctic explorer remains silent after cablegram announcing his success. Mrs A B Sullivan confirms Mrs Cook staying at her home and plans uncertain until she reaches Brooklyn to read messages. It is learned she may travel to Brussels to meet her husband.
Francis J Heney, San Francisco special prosecuting attorney in graft and bribery cases and candidate for district attorney, arrives from Alaska to a packed theatre ovation. The audience waves American flags with streamers reading equality before the law as Heney delivers his address.
New York on September 4 an aging musician 65 named Orlamunder shot his crippled wife and then killed himself at the grave of her previous husband. A court affidavit found in Mrs Orlamunder’s handbag cited a pact to die together with agreement wording about burial expenses.
Washington reports the navy will purchase ten vermeil vessels including a cruiser torpedo boat destroyer and five torpedo boats using the $13,000,000 appropriation for naval establishment improvements. The plan lists a cruiser, a torpedo boat destroyer and five torpedo boats.
Ellwood City Pennsylvania police say two men were arrested tonight on suspicion of involvement in the wrecking of the Royal Blue. Baltimore & Ohio railway police superintendent Delenty stated he believed one man had phoned a confession before more suspects could be questioned.

He ties Roosevelt Taft policies to broader national efficiency and urges public action to prevent monopolies. He stresses government oversight and citizen protest.
Ironwood Mich Sept 4 Former President Herman JF John of the First National Bank of Tronwood killed himself today by shooting. The bank failed in June and officials were to be tried in federal court next week on embezzlement charges involving several hundred thousand dollars.
Springfield Missouri report says Bryan was being taken to Doling Park when the car brake failed on a steep hill. The vehicle veered toward an embankment but was stopped at the edge by driver R P Dickerson.
