Secretary of Commerce states that the present administration’s program offers the safest path forward. He argues for steady national growth and confidence in government policy under Hoover.
In a radio talk from Denver on October 25 Secretary of Commerce Hoover appeals to western voters to preserve the present federal government and argues that only the Republican record offers a practical program. He says La Follette's party is a party of destruction and stresses tax reductions and budget discipline as core gains.
Washington Oct. 25 subpoenas issued by the Senate campaign fund investigating committee target witnesses for early next week as it probes expenditures on behalf of the Republican national ticket. The panel also reviews stories by two Chicago men about alleged money misuse and prepares to question them under agreement with Senator La Follette’s counsel.
Henry C. Wallace secretary of agriculture died at 4 PM at the naval hospital from toxemia following last week’s operation for sciatica. He was 58. Funeral services will be held Monday in the White House east room with government and diplomatic corps in attendance. Burial in Des Moines after private services. President Coolidge named Charles F. Marvin acting agriculture secretary.

Statistics show France imported 6,827 automobiles from the United States and sold 144 French cars to Americans in the first half of 1924. Italy ranks second with about 1,000 imports.
The navy dirigible Shenandoah landed at Lakehurst New Jersey at midnight after a 9000 mile round trip across the United States. The 18 and a half day voyage ended with the craft circling the station before the crew dropped a rope coil and the ship was tethered to the ground.
The U S S Shenandoah, America's first built rigid airship, finishes a 9000 mile voyage from Lakehurst to across the United States and back. It logs 235 hours of actual flight, maintains constant radio contact, and completes the trip in 445 hours from start to finish with five 300 horsepower engines running nonstop.
Santa Fe, Oct. 25. Criminal complaints filed before Justice F. C. De Baca accuse Andres Gallegos, son of County Clerk Antonio Gallegos, of forgery. Two warrants for 11 and 12.25 dollars allegedly forged endorsements for Roybal and Ramirez. The comptroller’s audit cites check raising and irregularities in San Miguel county government, including 33 raised vouchers or warrants.
Minneapolis October 23 railroads of the northwest meet with the joint terminal grain committee to agree on an embargo on grain shipments to the Muluth and Sunerier terminals. Embargo becomes effective at 11:59 p m Monday October 27.
London reports publish a foreign official document alleged to reveal a Moscow plot against Britain. The letter from Zinovieff to the British Communist Party discusses overthrow of institutions and subversion of royal forces. The foreign office protests while the Labor government faces partisan scrutiny.
Raton New Mexico October 24 Bob Evans the man who shot Officer Taffe is again in the hospital in worse condition after prior hospital care and confinement. Deputies feared escape and he was bound to bed with the sheriff noting his injury path. Evans denies shooting Taffe while partners identify him as the shooter and his allies defend him.
Stanford University defeated the University of Idaho at Multnomah Field in Portland Oregon after a rain soaked gridiron clash. The score details are unclear due to the weather but Stanford secured victory on October 25.
The New Mexico Supreme Court in Santa Fe on October 25 awarded Mrs. Hilaria Martinez a new trial after reversing a voluntary manslaughter conviction for killing Andres Lopez. Martinez testified she fired her rifle in self defense when Lopez advanced from behind, threatened her with an axe, and refused to leave while near a mill.
Denver October 25 Secretary Hoover will join water commissioners from New Mexico and Colorado in Colorado Springs to set dates and locations for further Rio Grande commission hearings. Delph E Carpenter from the Colorado river compact commission accompanies Hoover. A Texas appointee will join later. sessions likely from Alamosa to El Paso in mid November.
At California Stadium in Berkeley on October 25 1923 the California Golden Bears defeated Washington State College 27 to 0 to start their coast conference schedule. The Bears dominated the game led by their four time champion squad.
Laura Jean Libbey, famed woman writer, died at 4 p m in Brooklyn at 62. Born in New York, she began writing after a school composition impressed editor Robert Bonner. Libbey published 56 novels mainly on love themes, many best sellers, with happy endings she said appealed to women readers. Her works included Lovers Once But Strangers Now and When His Love Grew Cold.

Wayland College of Plainview Texas defeated Montezuma College Las Vegas New Mexico 24 to 0 in an offensively stalling football game played yesterday afternoon. Montezuma produced limited scoring chances as Wayland controlled both sides of the line and secured the shutout.
Charles G. Dawes assailed the La Follette movement and “cowardly, trimming politicians” in his New York speech. He argued lack of political courage kept voters away, blaming both the La Follette and Democratic sides while warning that a constitutional amendment could give Congress broader power over the judicial veto.
