Reports from St. Petersburg describe ten days of near continuous fighting leaving a practical draw. Kuropatkin withdraws and reorganizes to face Oyama across the Sakhe river while both sides show fatigue and winter cold. The capture of Shakhe town gives the Russians strategic control on both river banks, signaling possible renewed large scale action.
Tokyo dispatch reports General Marqus Oyama says the Shakhe river engagement yielded 500 Japanese prisoners and 45 guns taken, with 10 550 corpses counted.
A Mukden dispatch dated October 1 reports heavy artillery exchanges around Kuropatkin’s quarters with thirteen Japanese cannons captured, as units pass the Ready quarters and the Russian center near Geneva.
