Francis Schlatter the divine healer arrived in Denver from New Mexico on September 16 1895 and drew crowds as he cured with hands on. Observers in Omaha report they have seen a man in Hastings claimed as the 1895 Francis Schlatter. Photographs of the original Schlatter support the belief they are not the same man. The 1895 figure, born in Alsace Lorain, worked as a Denver shoemaker and avoided money while aiding others.
Local records identify the Hastings casualty as Charles McLean who used aliases Francis Schiatter and Francis Schrader. McLean supposedly followed by a younger partner and posed as a divine healer to solicit money across the country. The two traveled with claims of healing powers and tied to earlier earners of the same lineage.
