A troop train carrying 179 officers and men wrecked near the state line Alabama, killing 20 soldiers and injuring about 100. Rescue work and investigations followed, with authorities assessing the cause and extent of the wreck.
Twenty military men from Fort Morgan and Fort Haraneas on a Mobile & Ohio special train died when the engine tender jumped a trestle near State Line. About 100 others were injured as three coaches plunged twenty-five feet. 16 bodies recovered by 9 p.m. with more believed beneath wreckage.
