A devastating West Indian hurricane swept Florida and reached Savannah and Key West. Wind speeds over 90 mph damaged buildings, cut communications, flooded coastlines, and caused extensive power and property losses across cities from Jacksonville to St Augustine and Tybee Island.
President Taft viewed Ellis Island immigration operations and ordered reforms. He granted admission to Welsh miner George Thornton and his seven children after questioning, while urging stronger penalties on steamship lines and in advance family eligibility checks.

They transfer to the steamer Trent after lowering the airship’s life boat, amid tropical storm chatter and anxious outcry as Taft authorizes searches.
In Reed City Michigan Ocet 1k the balloon Dusseldorf IL flown by pilot Gericke with Aide Perkins passed town tonight. Gericke lowered altitude to look for direction then climbed and headed northeast.
Balloons starting from St Louis in the International race for the James Gordon Bennett trophy crossed Michigan towns in erratic patterns. The America was sighted near Reed City and Manistee, with several unknowns moving toward Ludington and Lake Huron. Meyers, a Goldfield Nevada mining man, testified to the visit on October 12, though Gibson did not testify as women in the courtroom offered flowers at the conclusion.
St. Joseph Missouri October 18 David Krankin operator of the largest farm in the world died at Tarkio Missouri at 4 pm after a paralytic illness begun last Saturday. Rankin was prominent in north Missouri affairs and widely known as a philanthropist.
The fall term federal court in Pause Texas concluded with two gangs of opium smugglers disrupted. CC B Stevenson, using many aliases, was convicted and sentenced to eleven months in the Fort Leavenworth federal penitentiary. Additional men received jail terms and heavy fines as the operation spanned San Francisco Denver St Louis and Los Angeles. An estimated 1000 pounds of opium, valued at 100 a pound monthly, moved through Pause before last spring arrests by treasury officials.
In a bloody battle near Huajuatlan in Vera Cruz state last night a rurales sergeant and corporal and eight bandits were killed. Among the dead outlaws was the notorious Santanon.
Judge G A Richardson urged separate submission of a constitutional prohibition provision at the same time as the state constitution. Santa Fe delegates and several speakers argued for and against including the prohibition plank, with testimonies from Mrs Nutter and Mrs Patterson and remarks on crime and portales.
