The twenty third annual New Mexico fair ends in Albuquerque with praise for the fair association and a cautious forecast of final expenses. Officials acknowledge heavy costs but hope subscription receipts will cover bills as crowds from Santa Fe Las Cruces and other towns fill seats and boost regional pride.
The records show that E H Harriman has invested heavily in his railroad system. Documents indicate at least 86 608 038 dollars has been spent on the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific lines over the past ten years. The report notes the vast expenditure aimed at strengthening the network.

London reports a Pekin dispatch in The Times describing a mysterious attempt to blow up the British legation magazine during a military ball. Wires were laid but not connected to the army, and 44.7 inch gun breech blocks and sights were stolen but later recovered in the native city.
A Dauween dispatch reports rumors that two major Klondike trading firms, the North American Trading and Transportation company and the Northern Commercial company, may split. General Manager Saom denies the rumor as freight movements last week hint at potential separation. Stockholders include the Cudahy, Gersti, and Northern Commercial groups.
The town of Galveston is burning in a blaze reported Oct 18 from Kokomo Indiana. The station agent wired the news of a fire of incendiary origin then cut the message saying the situation was already half burned. About 1,900 residents live in Galveston. Kokomo fire department has been dispatched.
Paris October 18 King Victor Emmanuel of Italy and Queen Helen began the day in the Italian chapel without escort and later watched a military review at Vincennes. They then attended a full state lunch at the Eiviven Palace with military and naval officials including US attachés, and King Victor praised the French army while thanking Paris for the visit. President Loubet answered.
The Hearst congressional special arrived in Prescott for Phoenix and departed for Guaymas Sonora at 11 30 am altering plans that would have taken it through New Mexico today.

Yokohama Oct 18 The Japanese minister of war Lieutenant General Trauchiki denies the army desires war and says the cabinet is unanimous in wishing for peace with honor.
