San Francisco October 17 Orders were sent by radio to the guard cutter Shawnee standing by the burned steamer City of Honolulu to sink the burned hull at once. Gunfire or dynamite will be used as the hull is regarded a navigation menace.

The Dutch steamer Cortieus sank near the Gulf of Bothnia rocks with all life boats lost. Twenty four crew members drowned after the vessel broke apart in a gale that prevented any rescue. The crew initially refused help from shore.

Mount Clemens Michigan October 1. An airplane without landing gear landed safely at Selfridge field in an official army test. Lieutenant S E Johnson in a Sperry plane climbed to several hundred feet, retracted the gear, and touched down within 190 yards. The machine was undamaged. Further tests at higher speed will assess safe landing limits.
Cincinnati by Oct 17. C KR Knowles of Chicago president of the American Railway Bridge and Building association predicts railroads will invest millions in new yards track and warehouses over the next five years. He says the spending will surpass all previous history as repairs and improvements continue.
