Zurich reports a German foreign ministry statement claiming a great revolt began in Moscow. Meanwhile Washington notes Soviet Russia’s resource strain and rising internal weakness may bolster General Wrangel’s anti-bolshevik position.
In Sebastopol on October 13 observers report General Wrangel’s forces making progress across the Dneiper amid stiff Bolshevik resistance. They note sudden Bolshevik counter-moves toward Ology Station and warn that Polish Russian peace terms delay Soviet efforts to dislodge Wrangel.
After a narrow range, wheat on the Chicago Board of Trade jumps 13 cents from the prior close and stands about 10 cents above yesterday. Traders cite Governor Allen’s plea for protection of wheat farmers and possible argo on Canadian imports as factors. Short covering and large Canadian imports are noted as contributors to the movement.
Forty physicians gather for the annual New Mexico Medical Association convention in Roswell. Delegates come from El Paso and Fort Worth Texas as sessions run full at the Elks club. Visitors toured district farms and attended a smoker at the Country club with a banquet planned at the Gilder hotel to close the event.
Theodore Nordiusch a York Neb high school football player died from neck injuries suffered in a game between Polk and Stromsburg last Saturday. He died here today from the injuries.
Secretary Colby declared that League members cannot enter any association with nations outside the league under Article 20 of the covenant. He said Senator Harding’s idea would exclude partnerships with England France or the forty other league members and would fail to interest historic enemies still wishing to join the League once allowed.
Weather outlook shows Saturday and Sunday mainly fair with gradual warming. Temperatures range from mid 40s to mid 60s with lighter winds and no significant precipitation expected.
Gilpatrick of Kansas City was elected president of the Laundry Owners' National Association at the San Francisco gathering. Cleveland was chosen as the next convention city, with the 1920 convention to adjourn tonight.
Indianapolis October 14 Senator Harding urges doing everything to prevent future wars and supports refining the Versailles league to preserve peace. He accuses the administration of waste and stagnancy, argues the Republican program offers real domestic reform, and criticizes the idea of binding the U.S. through article ten. The Tomlinson Hall crowd cheers as he defends reasoned campaigns over expulsions.
Philadelphia authorities report Pasquale recanted his claim of kidnapping Baby Hinkely Coughlin, saying the confession was a lot of bunk and given to provide the state police something to pursue. He insisted he did not smother the child or dump the body in the Behavikill river.
A couple, W. Fr. Bennigen and Leonora Kasten, released from county jail after vagrancy charges, sought to go straight aided by Rabbi Moise Bergman. They faced fines, then married an hour after obtaining a license from Rev. Harold Davidson. The Mann Act risk faded as no federal case proceeded.
Roosevelt county Democrats condemn a Portales Journal editorial attacking religious groups. The statement from MES. BM LANG and others says the piece promotes prejudice and was published without county approval. They urge unity and defend voters’ right to worship freely.
Special dispatch from Portales reports Judge Richard H. Hanna denouncing Republican backed editorials as putrid propaganda against Spanish American people and the Catholic Church. He cites papers bought for Burson and translated into Spanish with nationwide distribution. The audience urged Ryther’s removal from the county ticket after his public apology.
Santa Fe October 15 Arthur Seligman chairman of the state democratic committee charges that Republican leaders plan to use an obscure Portales Journal article attacking Spanish Americans and Catholics to influence voters. He says editor Ryther shifted from Republican ties and calls the tactic reprehensible and injurious to New Mexico politics. He predicts a Republican defeat and accuses leaders of preying on race and religion.
Senator James A. Reed announced he rented the Kansas City Convention Hall for Thursday night October 21 to discuss political issues in his own way. He said he would do all the talking himself and hold the meeting under his own auspices.
Warsaw reports General Joseph Pilsudski, president of Poland, tendered his resignation today but withdrew it provisionally at the government’s request. Once a dictator and military leader, Pilsudski had steered Poland’s early postwar struggle against the Bolsheviks and the Kresian detachment at Warsaw.
In New York on October 15 two men were arrested after police stopped an automobile hearse reportedly carrying liquor. The vehicle contained six five gallon jugs of alcohol bound for New Jersey, part of an investigation into alleged curb market activity.
