Flying parcel covers 740 miles in one day, flies 93 miles in 33 minutes on the return leg. Maynard records a new distance and speed in the aerial derby, highlighting a rapid cross country flight by a single pilot.
Report from Sidney Nebraska dated Oct 15 notes Lieut Maynard arriving in Chicago at 6 45 pm Mountain time after flying from Mineola to San Francisco. He expects to reach Chicago by Thursday night if speed holds. Westbound flights faced heavy snow slowing progress prior to clearing toward noon.
Four airplanes were on return trips in the army transcontinental air derby. Leader Lt. Maynard, flying Laeut KB, W Maynard, was halfway across the continent after an overnight stop at Sidney, Nevada. In Utah's Castle Rock area during a trans continental air derby, pilot French Kirby and observer Lieut Stanley C. Miller lost their lives when their No. 44 aircraft plunged about 200 feet. Kirby died instantly. Miller died at 6:40 p.m. after emergency aid arrival. Surviving relatives listed include Kirby's widow in Garden City New York and Miller's family in Mountaineville Pennsylvania.
