A Board ruling designates 451,911 beneficiaries linked to the Maintenance of Way union. Details specify the scope and impact of the decision on eligible members and related benefits.
After a ten day deadlock the railway labor board granted a 2 cent an hour increase to roughly 451 411 members of the United Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes and Railway Shop Workers. The move adds 22 125 000 to the national railroad wage bill and raises the average minimum wage from 23 to 37 cents per hour.
An appeal to adopt English in opera and to establish two national operas highlighting American names customs and naval life has been sent to women groups nationwide by the Opera in Our Time foundation. Mrs Archibald Freer notes Chicago donors funded opera for years and argues national repertoire strengthens art and economy, earning global respect.
The San Francisco Seals clinched the 1922 Coast League pennant by beating Oakland 6 to 5 in ten innings in the first game of a doubleheader. Lt. R. I. Maughan won the Pulitzer trophy aerial race at Mt. Clemens Michigan on a 166 mile course at 206 mph. Lt. L. J. Maitland was second with a 216.1 mph lap and a 263 mph overall, while Lt. S. J. Brow finished third. The event set multiple speed records and drew about 20 000 spectators.
Rome reports Italian women protest price spikes across food and clothing. Before the war hats cost 25 to 10 lire, now 120 to 400 lire. wool 6 lire a yard, now 40 to 60. shoes 25 lire, now 140 to 250. suits 75 lire, now 400 to 750. Food costs also jumped four to sixfold, olive oil 10 lire per quart, wine 4.20 lire, eggs 60 to 70 centimes, milk 1.50 lire a quart, butter 10 lire per pound.
In Portland Oregon on October 14 three men died when the dredge Portland of the Port of Portland commission sank after a collision with the steamship Santa Clara a 10 000 ton vessel. Forty men were aboard the dredge and it sank within two minutes of the crash.
Charles G. Dawes former director general of the national budget told 300 bankers and business men at a Waldorf Astoria dinner that his remark saved ten million dollars by pressuring cabinet officers to reveal motives and actions. He recalled clashes with Roosevelt and Harbord as part of budget battles.
West Point Army football team erased a slow start to beat Alabama Polytechnic 19 to 6 in the north south interscholastic contest. The Cadets surged in the final period while Alabama Poly faltered after a strong first three quarters.
Over 104 families submitted fire hazard surveys via school distribution in Albuquerque. Fire Chief Robert Henderson praised 1 364 returned blanks, the school system cooperation, and the strong fire drill performance, hoping for further demonstrations before term end.

St Paul, Minn Oct 14 three home runs by Krueger powered the St Paul American Association champions to a 4 to 0 victory over the Baltimore Internationals. The win ties the series at 4 games to 2 with the next game scheduled for tomorrow at the same site.
In Washington Pennsylvania four persons were injured when temporary seats for the W and J Carnegie Tech football game collapsed soon after the second quarter began. A woman and a boy were reported seriously hurt by physicians.
Washington announces another week of exemption from the liquor transport ruling for ships leaving foreign ports after tonight. Prohibition officials, after speaking with President Harding, say only foreign vessels get the grace period, not American privately owned ships.
Potsdam October 14 Former Emperor William has begun bestowing wedding favors. One recipient is Sambo a South African who was a drummer in the life guard Hussars and now, after military demobilization, takes a taxi call job at the Hotel Action in Berlin He will wear a baby blue uniform in Ander den Linden. He is fluent in German and a skilled linguist.
The Journal reports that Secretary A. K. Fall, visiting home in Three Rivers, was urged by Republican State Chairman Hugh B. Woodward to assist in the campaign if time allows. No reply to Woodward's telegram had been received by nightfall.
Washington note reports the winter program of White House social functions including diplomatic, army and navy, judiciary and legislative receptions cancelled because Mrs. Harding is ill though improving. She has sat up only briefly.
Berlin reports spiraling prices eight years after the war with the mark barely buying basics. A native pessimist laments that only a wire nail is affordable, while clothing, shoes, and even bread, butter, thread, and a bottle of champagne now cost vastly more in marks. A Darmstadt shop posts a note calling for Germans only after a devalued dollar note exchange.
Manchester October 14 Lloyd George sternly defends the government to the Reform Club stressing the strategic value of the Dardanelles and warning that repeating 1914 would risk renewed war. He argues Allies needed access to Black Sea resources and warns against letting the Turks cross into Europe.
