A dramatic skyward ascent over Albuquerque caps the largest New Mexico fair in state history. The big carnival tonight promises a spectacular close with crowds and excitement high.
Downtown events run from 10:00 a m to 10:20 p m with free acts at the Gladway and fair grounds. Highlights include baseball at 12:45, Indian races, running and flying acts by Aviator Walsh, shooting exhibition by Rush Razee, poultry prizes, and the Nat Reise Carnival company grand opening on Gladway.
Charles F. Walsh in a Curtiss biplane again dazzled crowds with two aerial flights at the State fair. He will perform further demonstrations this afternoon dropping dummy battleship shells to illustrate wartime airpower. His long 25 to 30 mile voyage yesterday drew thousands as shoppers and workers watched the aeroplane skim the city sky.
Albuquerque or El Paso hosts the grand Montezuma ball last night, lauded as the year's most brilliant social event in New Mexico. The Nat Reiss carnival drew large crowds with a Grand Carnival tonight promising thrill rides, Fat Lady and Ossified Man acts, high dives, and a confetti-filled turquoise sky as locals anticipate a lively night of fun.
The body of Frank B. Tice, a farmer near the Methodist Mission, was recovered and will be shipped to Polo Illinois. He held twenty five thousand dollars life insurance. Flood losses range from twenty five thousand to five hundred thousand dollars. Fifty lowland residences and all mission buildings on the San Juan were swept away. Five government buildings at Shiprock were destroyed and several other structures damaged. Farmington Atter Bloomfield Blane Cedarhill and Fruitland escaped injury. Orchards on higher lands remained uninjured.
In Ogden Utah on October 13 the Harriman lines report trains running as scheduled. Southern Pacific adds workers in shops while strikers keep picketing the stockade. Early today two pickets tried to speak with strike breakers. they drew guns and drove them away prompting riot rumors and a swift police response.
President Taft enjoyed a warm reception across California with Governor Johnson introducing him in Marysville and Sacramento. In Oakland he watched a naval parade as thousands of bluejackets were reviewed and the president spoke from the Capitol steps. The tour continues toward Los Angeles with events planned at the Panama Pacific Exposition grounds.
After the Pacific Meet demonstration in Oakland Taft visited San Francisco where electric lights outlined Ferry Building and big structures. He rode Market Street amid cheering crowds to the Press Club for a reception and then proceeded to a formal banquet at his hotel.
San Francisco returns from 2,944 precincts show 121,166 votes for woman suffrage and 118,668 against, a 2,498 majority in favor. An amendment designated as Number 9 passes, reforming California criminal procedure by limiting reversed judgments and new trials for evidentiary errors unless the whole case proves a miscarriage of justice.
The Lakes to Gulf Deep Waterways Association resolutions committee debated inserting criticism of President Taft. The proposed planks urge Congress to act now to deepen the Mississippi channel and drainage canal, and call for joint action by Congress and state legislatures to begin work soon.
Los Angeles October 13 James B McNamara murder trial stalls as juror eligibility of the first salesman Nelson remains unsettled. Defense attorney Clarence Darrow argues constitutional rights limit exclusions while state counsel cites California penal code and past graft cases. Court adjourns at sunset with two hour session planned for tomorrow.
Tripoli reports the landing of artillery ammunition and stores from Italian transports. Arabs volunteer as porters while ration distributions ease famishing civilians. Turkish soldiers near Beni Adam camp reportedly show willingness to surrender seeking transport to Constantinople.
Constantinople dispatch says Italy, urged by the powers, has made peace proposals to Turkey. The move is expected to advance peace prospects amid ongoing conflict.
Critics deride a Las Vegas platform promise of honesty economy and efficiency as hypocritical. They accuse the Bursum ring of stolen elections, public funds looting, and mismanagement, demanding residents question the platform and the record of officials who endorse it.
Democratic leaders flood Estancia and Willard to rally for good government. Flood and McDonald address voters at 8 pm with torchlight escort, aiming to start a large bipartisan demonstration against graft.
