Anarchy erupts in Armentieres as a 6000 strong mob attacks banks and shops after a weavers strike. Rioters block cavalry with linen barriers, set fires, loot houses, and pull fuel from factories while troops and Lille’s reinforcements quell the chaos by midnight.
J. K. Defebaugh of Chicago, editor of the American Lumberman and renowned forestry authority, is in Albuquerque as guest of Ir B. Bennett of the American Lumber company. He will speak on forestry in relation to irrigation during the New Mexico convention.
Lord Rosebery spoke in Sheffield tonight to record his opposition to Mr. Chamberlain's fiscal policy. The audience greeted him with enthusiasm as he delivered a brilliant denunciation of protection, peppered with caustic references to Mr. Chamberlain and the government’s predicament.
Cincinnati opens the first of about two dozen indictments nationwide against postofficials. Daniel Voorheis Miller of Terre Haute and Joseph M Johns of Rockville Tad face charges of conspiring to obtain money from John J Ryan, a territory post official, by influencing postal dealings. More than a hundred eastern bankers and friends departed New York by special New York Central train to attend the American Bankers Association meeting in San Francisco from October 20 to 23. Ridgley. the 7,500 mile itinerary includes sight seeing in Del Monte Santa Barbara Los Angeles and visits to Albuquerque Santa Fe Las Vegas and Salt Lake City before returning November 4.
Samuel Gompers president of the American Federation of Labor and James Duncan secretary urged New York building trades unions to accept arbitration proposed by the Employers' association. The move follows Gompers investigation of the city’s labor situation and marks a setback for unions who refused to sign.
The opening day featured several strong showings led by Shecam who won all three heats in the free for a pace with Gayfield and Alfred Co. close behind. Billy Mason edged Honest John in a brisk half mile dash and the main 2:17 pace with a $1000 purse drew seven entries including Laura Spur and Raven Dixon. Panama reports Zelaya of Nicaragua and Estrada Cabrera of Guatemala plan war against El Salvador and Honduras. Ten thousand Guatemalan troops march toward the Salvadoran frontier with artillery. San Salvador forms a Salvadorean army under General Regalado near Santa Ana. Acajutla shipments move to Lauion and Amapala supplies to Nicaragua. Salvador and Honduras back a liberal Nicaragua movement led by Dr. Francisco Daca.
Troops have arrived hourly and pitched camp as fast as possible. Wagons sink into soft prairie roads, horses and gear bogged by rain. Soldiers sleep on wet ground tonight with hay for bedding. Remainder expected tomorrow.

Washington October 13 Judge Isaac T Stoddard secretary of the territory of Arizona, facing charges, had an interview with Secretary Hitchcock today. The result of the interview was not disclosed.
A steady rain over forty eight hours leaves Camp William Carey Sanger in fearful shape as roads become severely rutted and mud hampers movement. Soldiers endure wet, difficult conditions with ongoing relief efforts reported.
At 2 40 p m a $1000 pace stake race sparks opening events. The carnival opens with roping and rough riding contests. A Hearst special train arrives at 8 20 p m and the Hearst party is entertained at the carnival grounds with Indian dance and riding. The Commercial club hosts the season opener at 9 p m with the Hearst party reception and usual carnival attractions remain.
Chief McMill warns the public to guard against pick pockets, confidence men and sneak thieves amid crowds. Several arrests reported as detectives push operations. no unusual crime spike noted. Weather notes mention extreme heat across southern California with highs from 94 to 146 degrees and dry vegetation.
The second day of the New Mexico annual fair drew large crowds across grounds and streets. Queen Marie’s crowning was postponed to Friday night due to incomplete costumes, with plans for a public Moorish wedding Sunday and a Mardi Gras night on Saturday.
