A violent coastal gale scours the Mexican Gulf sweeping vessels from moorings. Some ships are driven ashore on remote sands while others vanish into treacherous waters, with crews facing uncertain fates as the storm rages.
Key West reports a fierce hurricane, with 100 mph winds at peak damaging the waterfront and many brick and frame buildings. Several factories suffer partial destruction, the top of the First National Bank blown off, and post office damaged as 100 vessels in harbor either sail away or wreck on beaches.
Des Moines and Winona report snowfall with several inches accumulating. Des Moines notes snow today and tonight while Winona records three inches of snow on October 11 with continued flurries.
At Seattle on October 11 Miss Lizzie Arnold 16 of Bellingham threw 209 feet 5 inches to break the women’s world record in a girls and women’s baseball throwing contest. The prior mark of 204 feet 2 inches was set by Marjorie Bell of Chicago.
Hearst and Gaynor met in public addresses amid bitter exchanges over campaign tactics. Gaynor urged a joint debate on issues while denouncing Hearst for alleged demagogy and alliances. Hearst defended his independent Civic Alliance nomination and warned against Tammany-linked opponents.
Miami Fla Jan 11 officials of the Florida East Coast railroad report failure to reach 2500 to 3000 men at work on the road’s extension to the lower keys by land or sea. Fears arise for the men’s safety after the 1906 hurricane claimed 149 lives. Camps are said to be better fortified now.
Washington reports anxiety for government property along the storm path. The revenue cutter Forward is at Key West, the Winona at Mobile, and the Windom at Calveston. The life saving service sustained many boat losses in the gulf hurricane. the Biscayne Bay station near Sand Key stands over 140 miles north of Key West.
A dire Havana report details the most serious Cuban tornado to date striking October 17 1906. It devastated the western island injuring about twenty five and killing five with substantial harbor damage including ships sunk or blown ashore.
James K Cunningham was found insane at the time of the June shooting of stenographer Miss Caroline Brasch of Gray Brothers in San Francisco. A man arrested for the crime had confessed and a jury committed Cunningham to a state hospital for the insane after a verdict of insanity.
On Tuesday October 12 1909 the fair grounds open at 9 AM with a carnival at the Plaza at 10 AM. Afternoon events include a U S Third Cavalry march to the fair grounds a baseball game against Albuquerque pace and trot races purse events and a Great push ball game. Downtown evening features a Plaza carnival three free acts a grand ball by the U S Cavalry at the armory and a final free act.
The twenty ninth annual New Mexico fair opened with Governor Curry leading ceremonies at the fairgrounds. Cavalry troops, a harness racing program, and a strong exhibition hall lineup promise a packed crowd as the event runs through the week.
Frightful crime in Carlsbad as a Mexican assailant named Tomaso Hubatbac breaks into Francisco Sanchez's shack at 11 o'clock. He stabs Sanchez, gouges out his eyes, then hacks at the skull with a knife before using an axe. Local police pursue suspect.
A stranger killed well known Pecos Valley resident Sanchez known as Chapo after being allowed to sleep in his shack. The killer claimed a nightmare drove him and called Sanchez a witch before arrest by Sheriff Cicero Stewart. Public indignation rises over the brutal act and apparent hospitality betrayal.
In Seattle at Union Station a masked robber struck the Great Northern Express office last night. The thief gagged the night clerk and an assistant and escaped with gold and silver from the safe. The amount stolen is not known exactly but not less than $2,000. Police have not yet located the heavyset man.
The verdict sparked strong opposition to the death sentence as Ferrer was moved to Montillieri amid fears of a possible rescue. His arrest triggered agitation across Spain France and Italy. In court Ferrer was barred from testifying. prosecutors read depositions previously recorded as most evidence.
From Mexico City Ll Pres travels to Chihuahua for a two day visit then proceeds to El Paseo to meet President Taft. The journey receives a salute of 21 guns and full military honors as the train departs, with President Ding and his staff and the minister of war and marine in attendance.
The annual convention of the building trades department of the American Federation of Labor opens in Tampa Florida with reports from President Kirby and Secretary Spencer. Martin B Madden of Chicago attends to seek revocation of the Chicago Building Trades papell charter.
Three Chinamen Min Sing Leone Gong and Hom Woon were electrocuted at Charlestown state prison for the murder of four Chinese merchants and laundrymen during a tong war in Chinatown on August 2 1805. The killings are described as among the coldest attributed to hatchet men of the Hyinene race in this country.
Mineral Point Wisconsin October 11 The First National Bank reports a shortage of 210000 due to alleged forged notes. The bank began an internal audit and notified authorities as investigators review the discrepancies and potential suspects.
Karl Bullock a 16 year old robber seized $1000 from the State bank at Rae dora after forcing cashier BE FE Wilton and deputy Woods into a vault. He later shot Policeman Wilson Pringle at his mother's home and fled, as officers pursue him tonight in Lawrence Kansas.
Charles W. Morse, banker and steamship organizer, is sentenced to fifteen years at Atlanta federal prison after a circuit court sustained his November conviction on national banking law violations. Bail stayed for forty days while Morse appeals to the Supreme Court. his wife and counsel vow to seek bail and continue the fight.
Fairbanks Alaska October reports navigation on the Tanana River was closed by freezing trapping steamers and stampeders for the Litared district. A thousand tons of freight are frozen and held until spring. Two steamers bound for the new district are stuck and may be in danger at breakup.
It Perrer, former director of the Modern school in Barcelona, has been sentenced to death and will be shot Wednesday night after being found principal instigator of the recent revolutionary movement. The Madrid court proceedings were divided.
Police say a woman's severed limbs were found in a suitcase at an outlying auction. A New Bedford newspaper from yesterday was found with the remains, and investigators believe the victim was murdered in New Bedford and the limbs brought to Tiverton.
