Virginia Coller aged 16 who vanished from New York on October 24 1916 has been found living married in a small town out west. Police report Miss Coller and Yang Sing a Chinese man were traced from Chicago to San Francisco Seattle then Japan. Yang Sing was arrested at Ellis Island while awaiting a hearing. The couple had traveled via Manila before returning to New York.
Governors of the stock exchange voted to close the market on Saturday October 28, the day after Columbus Day, in New York.
Reports from Petrograd and Riga describe heavy artillery and infantry actions on the Riga front and in the Ver dun sector as German, Austrian, and Italian forces clash. Mutinous unrest within the German fleet and harsh penalties follow as rumors of sailors' executions circulate.
Enlisted men from three batteries stationed in Douglas Arizona have bought Liberty bonds totaling 22860 since October 1 according to a military headquarters announcement.

Denver reports for New Mexico call for generally fair weather Thursday and Friday with cooler temperatures in the eastern portion on Friday.
William R. Seay was acquitted in Denver district court for the shooting death of Edward C. Green in the city hall office last May. Seay claimed self defense after a political quarrel tied to the April city election. Green had led a faction and presided as highway department superintendent, while Seay had been an employee.
London October 10 British admiralty reports fourteen merchant ships over 1 600 tons sunk by mine or submarine in the past week. Two vessels under 1 600 tons and three fishing vessels also were lost.
British and French forces pushed forward into the Flanders mud north and east of Ypres while counter attacks and brutal conditions limited gains. The British left and French right held a front roughly 500 yards east of the Poelcapelle Houtholst highway with persistent fighting around St Chemins farm and the Poelcapelle brewery.
President Wilson issues a proclamation extending food administration control to license importation manufacture storage and distribution of about twenty key foods effective after November 1 1917. The order covers wheat rye barley oats corn rice beans cotton seed oil and more with penalties up to 5000 fine or five years' imprisonment for violations and many small dealers and farmers exempted.
Investigation of two leprosy cases among Grant County men revealed ten Mexican nationals in the group infected. Health officer Dr Sambkles supervised isolation and arranged transfer to El Paso for immigration authorities. The patients will be deported.
Henry Ahrendt real estate dealer of Victor Colo was shot at the tin apartments late tonight and died almost instantly. The wife surrendered to Sheriff Goese Whalen after handing over a revolver and provided no statement. Ahrendt 54 had lived in Victor seven years.
