Secretary Hughes in a Yale Brown convocation dinner warned public officers waste half their time on unnecessary contacts and mass distraction. He urged universities to balance liberal education with measured judgment and to lift standards while preserving access for the many.
Santa Fe, Oct. 9. Soldiers who paid 1922 taxes should demand a refund from the county treasurer of the exemption on $2,600 worth of property upheld in last week's decision by the state supreme court. Assistant Attorney General Armstrong said today in an opinion delivered to Adjutant General Skipworth, in response to a questionnaire on the operation of the law under the decision.
Denver forecast shows New Mexico unsettled with showers in north and east sections on Wednesday and unsettled northeast area. Thursday should be fair with little temperature change. Arizona expects fair weather Wednesday and Thursday with warmer conditions in the north and west.
Conditions for the twenty four hours ending 6 p m yesterday recorded by the university show a high of 86 degrees and a low of 68 with a mean around 76. Humidity at 6 p m was moderate and precipitation trace amounts noted. Wind was from the south with a partly cloudy day overall.

At Marfa Texas on October 9 the New Mexico annual conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South announced assignments. Albuquerque district presiding elder J B Cochran and a list of pastors and circuits including Alamogordo Carrizo Gallup Deming Santa Rita and Las Vegas district appointments.
In Artesia area the Pecos River remains at high water for days though minimal rainfall fell. The Pecos bridge east of town is unusable by conveyances and flood waters threaten Lake McMillin at Lakewood as it rises toward the spillway in coming days.
The 19,000 Hudson Coal Company miners on strike since Monday voted to resume work tomorrow and let the anthracite board of conciliation settle grievances. The decision followed a meeting advised by union officers.
Oklahoma Governor Walton offers to resign to prove his good faith in his fight against the Ku Klux Klan. He says he will step down once the legislature enacts an anti Klan bill and he will submit it for lawmaker approval. The plan calls for outlawing masked orders and requiring disclosure of membership lists to civil authorities.
The department of agriculture forecasts a three billion bushel corn crop for the year, the fourth largest in history and marking a repeat of the three billion plus level. Wheat is preliminarily estimated at 731,737,600 bushels with winter and spring components detailed, and durum included in spring wheat at 46,779,000 bushels.
Cleveland Oct 9 reports that Tris Speaker manager of the Indians is engaged to Miss Frances Cudahy were denied by both. Speaker admitted giving a large diamond ring but said it was a gift, not an engagement. He left for a two weeks fishing trip at Rainy Lake Ontario before returning home to Hubbard Texas.
Vaughn high school teams lost to Corona squads in a two day round up at Corona. Corona girls led at times before a star from the town team helped seal a 12 to 9 win. Corona boys overwhelmed Vaughn 56 to 16 as the larger team controlled play throughout.
Paris reports Germany may seek early revival of Ruhr economics through negotiations with Ruhr interests. French officials say official French and Belgian stance remains unchanged they will not meet German representatives in Ruhr and will await inter allied reparations commission actions.

Washington representatives of American Bankers Association and the federal reserve district groups urged a joint congressional committee to improve and enlarge the reserve system.
