A large enthusiastic crowd gathered as the First State Fair 13 opened with a speech by the governor. William J. Mills notes a week of fun and frolic ahead with rides exhibits and entertainment for residents and visitors alike.
Sunny skies boost crowds at the Fast and Furious program of amusements today with aviation exhibitions listed for tomorrow. Local organizers expect strong attendance as equipment demonstrations and stunt displays attract families and visitors from nearby areas.
Official program for today lists events at the Nat Reiss Carnival on Gladway Central between Sixth and Seventh streets from morning to evening. Highlights include free sets, racing events with $500 purses, a shooting exhibition, pony and running races, and a grand opening with acts and the high diving dog Maxime.
Governor Mills opened the Thirteenth Annual New Mexico Carnival and First State Pair at Traction Park with a large crowd. Washington, Oct. reports indicate drought easing and crop conditions improving from September. Potatoes up 3.1 percent, flax 1.2, apples 3.6, rice down 1.8. corn up marginally. Spring wheat oats and burley show a 4 percent production drop from last year, with total 101,000,000 bushels, overall harvest about 356,000,000 bushels less than last year.
The McNamara brothers, indicted for murder in the Los Angeles Times building explosion, face possible first trial for James or John. Jurors narrowed to 45 as counsel push a speedy case while a gas dynamite experiment lab and a Times building model are shown to illustrate effects. Court recessed for a constitutional amendment election.
Grand jury returns three murder indictments after witnesses testify to seeing human flesh and bones near the Hille distillery owned by Will McIntyre in Rutherford County. A $200 governor’s reward is offered for McIntyre’s arrest as three men who handed money and were seen at the still disappeared.
California voters will decide on twenty three constitutional amendments including woman suffrage and the recall plus initiative and referendum amid Governor Johnson’s campaign. The recall amendment targets the judiciary as part of the statewide ballot.
A U S senate committee hearing reveals Stephenson campaign managers spent about 100000 for nomination efforts with estimates up to 200000 more possible. Rodney Sackett says better funding could canvass all 400000 Republicans, while questions probe payments to officials and several candidates.
