Helena Montana December 4 H W Beymour and Chris Mechingel two veteran miners working in Placer diggings in Grinley Gulch near Helena were killed when a cave in occurred last Friday. A search found the bodies of ten men later brought to the surface as a late crew rebuilt the site and recovered the victims.
The Griliah steamer Damara went aground on rocks near Fort Point while leaving San Francisco for London. Tugboats failed to refloat her and a barley cargo was unloaded while coal was jettisoned. A second towing attempt is planned at high tide.
One hundred leading Chinese merchants hosted a farewell banquet for a Pacific coast American business delegation in Pekin. The event underscored China’s opening to foreigners as American minister Calhoun praised the visit as a historic step toward stronger local representation.
