Ottawa Ont October 7 The Methodist general conference at its Closing session decried Sunday activities in hotels restaurants and drug stores and urged restraint on golf social teas and travel. The Sabbath observance committee said Sunday faces a three fold menace to rest and spiritual opportunity.
Milan reporting from London on October 8 says Austrian shelling of Mount Loveden by air and ground continues daily but has not killed any Montenegrin soldiers. Corriere della Sera cites Montenegrin sources noting the bombardments are ineffective.
Cananea Sonora residents in the mining camp south of Nogales appeal to border aid amid a food shortage. Rail bridges have been burned since the Muaytorena and Carranga factions clashed, leaving the food supply almost exhausted and starving households in urgent need.
A German torpedo boat destroyer was sunk by a British submarine in the North Sea after only three minutes elapsed from impact to submersion. The brief action underscores rapid warfare effects at sea.
London reports the British submarine E-9 under Lt Commander Max Horton penetrated the Ems approaches and sank a German torpedo boat destroyer seven miles off Schiermonnikoog. Paris reports the Norwegian minister to France M Wedel Jarisberg escaped injury when his car was hit by shell fragments at the battle line. The chauffeur was killed and the vehicle disabled. Americans Seaman and Berg were briefly detained as suspects but released after credentials.
The condition of Cardinal Fer rata papal secretary of state worsened today and doctors debated consulting additional physicians this evening.

Mrs J Vor Tinesen of Plaintfield N J called it ludicrous to spend thousands locally on horse care while vast sums fund their overseas suffering.
London reports that David Lloyd George warned of severe distress in the cotton industry as war demands grow, noting it as the only trade to have completely broken down so far. Also, the trawler Lily blew up in the North Sea with seven crew missing while survivors reached South Shields.

London dispatch reports Cardinal Mercier and the Belgian justice minister among refugees leaving Antwerp by car for Flushing and Ostend. Over ten thousand fugitives reached Rozendaal as bombardment of Antwerp was clearly audible from that location.
An official Petrograd statement, relayed via London, declares Vienna’s claim of a large anti Russian movement in Persia and a Russian defeat as without foundation. It says only minor clashes with brigands occurred and that the brigands are Turkish, driven back across the frontier.

Paris dispatch says Germany has twenty three active army corps and eighteen reserve corps in France and Belgium, plus several landwehr and landsturm divisions, higher than newspapers had claimed, which cited twenty active corps and ten reserve corps engaged.
