Mrs Staples, sister of Alex Kels, told a Morning Journal representative she did not know of her brother's death when she read of his disappearance on October 3. She described Kels as a popular Lodi businessman and noted the family, all German-born, had little recent contact. Her husband, Mr Staples, works as night car foreman for the Santa Fe.
Telegraphed dispatch from Teheran reports heavy casualties and widespread homelessness after the September 27 earthquake in Kerman Persia.
trainloads of legionnaires depart from across the country to the 1924 San Francisco convention. Florida to New England and the central west send delegates on special trains like the national commander’s or gray mare bands. Officials and observers expect about 150 000 visitors with diverse sightseeing plans and routes.
A Bowman-Wpeed special train carrying leading hotel men will stop in Albuquerque from 9 30 to 13 39 on its eastward journey after a three week tour of the United States and Canada. Franciscan manager T Grier announced the program for the Hundred Hosts entertainment. Pablo Abeyta governor of Tileta will welcome the visitors with Isleta Indian dances and a sightseeing tour follows.

The Alvarado Hotel will add a sun room for guests occupying the space of the former news stand and curio room. Remodeling includes a 30 percent kitchen space increase, new ventilation heating and lighting systems, glazed white tile interiors, and updated electrical equipment. Construction started last week by the Santa Fe contractor and the sun room will open into the patio and be exclusive to hotel guests.
After 21 days the federal court special session began September 17 under Judge Phillips and closes tomorrow under Judge Nebiet. Morning Journal review shows 88 indictments with 46 convictions 21 acquittals and 16 deferred cases. Denver university defeats New Mexico university 10 to 7 at Denver. Williams scored the first TD, O Donnell kicked field goal, Jones scored for New Mexico, final score 10-7 after O Donnell’s third period drop kick gave Denver the lead.
Berlin October 6 Stresemann completes a new cabinet serving as chancellor and foreign minister with Hans Luther as finance minister and Koeth as minister of public economy. Other appointees include Wilhelm Solmann interior minister and Gustav Radbruch justice minister among seven others. the supplies post remains unfilled.
Radio messages picked up by RCA and Federal Telegraph indicated a ship was in distress off the San Francisco coast. No vessel name or details were learned as the messages appeared to be ship to ship, neither of which was the vessel in trouble.
Bernalillo county clubs take part in the annual state competition with poultry demonstrations by Garnet Burks and Conrad Beck et al, a sewing team led by Misses Gergia Perrel and Gwendolyn Kimeer, and a hot lunch team from Mountain View Cooking club. Mrs Maud Doty and See J Raynolds accompany them.
Illinois defeated Nebraska 14 to 4 in the opening game of 1922, marking the first time Illinois has beaten the Cornhuskers. Grange, in his first game for Illinois, scored two touchdowns after a scoreless opening period as Illinois outplayed Nebraska in both passing and open field running.
A strong 6:15 a.m. quake shook the area of Quebec. Many residents were awakened as walls in a 300 year old seminary toppled.
Hugh A. Carlisle post of the American Legion shifts its bi monthly meeting to Tuesday to allow all members to attend Major Toulouse’s reception at the Armory. Legion rooms at the public library are open to ex service men with pool tables reading room and refreshments. The group will assist the Chamber of Commerce in welcoming 3500 to 5000 legionnaires passing through Albuquerque en route to the San Francisco convention, and plan the Legion rooms as a rendezvous.
Report says three inmates were found dead in the prison dining hall after an attack. Authorities investigating the incident as a violent altercation occurred inside the facility. Names of the victims and suspects have not been released pending notifications.
At the Western Kentucky State Penitentiary on October 6 three convict murderers Monte Walters Lawrence Griffith and Harry Ferland were found dead in the mess hall after attackers stormed the barricaded area. Walters likely killed by a bullet during the siege while Griffith and Ferland died from pistol wounds to the heart, possibly choosing suicide to avoid ammonia exposure.
Paducah Ky Oct 6 Three convict murderers who held the western Kentucky state penitentiary for 81 hours killed three guards. After flooding the mesa hall with ammonia gas a seven man storming party found the trio dead. Authorities called the siege ended.
A blaze swept through Nashville's Second Avenue wholesale district causing an estimated loss of 250000. The Hooper Grocery Company and Cline and Bernheim stocks were destroyed in the fire.
Governor J C Walton issues a call for an extraordinary session on October 11 to consider anti-Ku Klux Klan legislation supported by military court evidence. Martial law has been in effect. Walton denies dodging impeachment and says he will defend his acts and pursue truth.
