President Woodrow Wilson reveals engagement to Mrs Norman Galt of Washington. The wedding date unknown but likely in December at the bride elects home. Mrs Galt, widow of a Washington jewelry businessman, is about thirty eight and has long been a White House guest and companion in social circles.

Udine Oct 6 King Victor Emmanuel narrowly escaped shell fire near the front riding among troops to direct operations His horse was wounded by shrapnel but he remained unhurt and ordered another mount as artillery resumed fire at a spot later noted as the King's Spur. The king also inspected casualties and photographed the crater left by the bombing.
The administration plans two key revenue moves for Congress to extend the sugar duty beyond May first and renew the emergency tax, with President Wilson and Secretary McAdoo in accord. Two Scotland Yard detectives arrived to take charge of Ignatius T T Lincoln who was extradited to England to answer forgery charges. Alfred Ward said he expected to question Lincoln soon.
