Swollen river breaches an embankment at Black River Falls Wisconsin washing out a village. Debris and floodwaters force residents to flee while authorities coordinate relief and assess damage from the torrent.
A La Crosse Wisconsin area flood engulfs Uinek River Falls and nearby towns after the Black River breaches two dams. The Tremont hotel collapses, businesses and homes vanish into floodwaters, and darkness falls as electric plants fail. Officials fear loss of life as the wave threatens Roaring Creek Irving North Bend Melrose Holmen Medford Midway Onalaska and surrounding countryside. Emergency crews rush to strengthen bridges while farmers receive warning via failing telephone lines.
The Wisconsin and Little Big Hill river gauge shows seven feet above normal and rising three inches hourly. A broken guard lock gate, abandoned repairs, and fast water undermine the switch yard. the Wisconsin Lendering office building and six boat houses were carried downstream while the grain line of the Chicago and North Western railroad is being rebuilt.

In Cleveland on October 6, Joseph Shipka aged 35 and Joseph Sloveck aged 20 were electrocuted when a live wire crossed a telephone line in a saloon. Shipka touched a desk telephone and fell. Sloveck, trying to save it, grabbed the wire and received a fatal shock.
Frederick Hamlin, superintendent of the Bayless Pulp and Paper Co. at Austin Pa, declines to testify at the coroner inquest into the dam disaster that ruined Austin. The inquiry is adjourned indefinitely. district attorney Nelson says it will not resume for two weeks to allow expert testimony. Hamlin cites potential self incrimination and a possible criminal prosecution as advised by his counsel Walter Sweathand.
The Democratic convention in Santa Fe unanam ously nominated Capt. W. C. McDonald of Carrizozo for governor. A Western, people’s candidate, he has thirty years in New Mexico, a civil engineer, cattle company manager, and one-term legislator. Backers hail him as clean, uncorrupted, and capable of leading New Mexico to an independent, economical, progressive government.
The scene in Austin returns to routine after debris removal and burial of victims. Two hundred wreck laborers strike at Costello over long hours, then are paid off and dismissed. Three bodies and charred remains of two others are recovered from the ruins.
