Union labor leaders voiced strong disapproval of a Russian Soviet plan in a critics’ rally. Delegates cheered a declaration calling the proposal an inflexible system rooted in an Asiatic mindset.
The American Federation of Labor convention approves steps to unionize steel, packing, southern textiles, and New York city office workers. Hodges denounces the Soviet system as cast iron and undemocratic, warns against forces working in the dark, and cites Britain’s labor gains as a model. President Gompers notes clergy cooperation for a Labor Sunday.
Albert Ballin was convicted by a federal jury of sending obscene letters through the mail. He was acquitted on a second indictment alleging use of the mails to defraud the government. Judge Knox set next Monday for sentencing and Ballin remains free on $1,500 bail.
Denver forecasts show Friday showers for New Mexico with likely Saturday east portion. temperatures unchanged. Arizona expected to be generally fair Friday with unsettled northeast and cooler north and extreme west. Saturday likely fair.

Constantinople Oct 4. The new Turkish constitution will proclaim Turkey a republic with a president elected for four or five years. The national assembly will hold legislative power while the cabinet, responsible to the assembly, will hold executive power. A council of state will fulfill functions of the upper house, with members appointed by the president.

Nine boys under 18 were sentenced by Judge Ben B. Lindsey in juvenile court to two months in the county jail left wing for borrowing cars to take their girlfriends on rides. Parents must pay for missing accessories after the thefts.
The Albuquerque Rotary Club endorsed Major Toulouse’s push for a War Mothers Memorial Hospital and plans to mobilize for his return from the East. Dr. Peters urged action, claiming local apathy compared to Denver and El Paso. Fire prevention and school safety notes were discussed, with Milne defending fire escape systems and demonstrating drills and building standards. A vocational paper by Dr. Lovelace on the antiquity of surgery was presented.
Chicago reports General Electric is developing a steam engine using mercury vapor to achieve nearly double the power for the same fuel. The design heats mercury to 675 degrees, transfers heat to a low pressure turbine, and recovers heat by using mercury exhaust to heat water for another turbine.
President Coolidge with Denby and Roosevelt honors 16 year veteran George Bradley chief gunner of the United States Navy. Bradley earned the medal for meritorious service under fire during the 1914 Vera Cruz landing while in charge of the ammunition party aboard the battleship Utah.
Difford Flippen formerly of El Paso Texas and more recently at an auto service station near the Los Angeles county jail was shot and killed by an unidentified man who fled through a rooming house and down a drain pipe to an alley. He had a prior quarrel with a man in El Paso. His mother Mrs. Blanche Alien is believed to live in El Paso at 217 11th San Antonio street. He was engaged to a young woman from Long Beach near Los Angeles who was recently placed in a local detention home.

M T Grier of the Franciscan hotel announced that the Bowman Woods special carrying 700 top hotel figures will stop in Albuquerque for two hours at 10 46 a m Sunday. A lobby Indian dance and Santo Domingo dancers will entertain, arranged with Arthur Prager and local officials to showcase the city. The train will depart Los Angeles at noon today, stop at the Grand Canyon Saturday, and arrive Sunday morning.
County commissioners awarded fuel for valley schools for the winter. About 400 tons of fancy Jump coal at 11.50 a ton saves the county roughly 896 compared with retail. Prices range from 11.25 to 12.50 a ton. contracts split between New State Coal Co and Hahn Coal Co to supply different districts.
Report from Dallas notes gasoline sold at lower per gallon price than water locally. Stations charge nine cents a gallon for gasoline and distilled water used in battery storage, while water costs ten cents a gallon. In Chicago, Standard Oil of Indiana cuts kerosene price by one and a half cents to 11 1/2 cents.
Santa Fe Oct 4 Annual fire losses in New Mexico rose from 76000 in 1913 to 265600 in 1922 excluding uninsured. W B Wagner head of the state insurance bureau cites decade figures and notes two thirds of losses are preventable with matches and smoking most damaging in 1921.
The New Mexico state highway department completed rebuilding the mesa road south of Willard in Torrance County. The improved route leads to Gran Quivira and Coyote on state highway No. 4 near Carrizozo. The 6th legislature funded the project and over 80 percent of the hill work was in solid rock.

Paris police arrest Gabriel Alphonse Mourey who was sought by New York police in connection with a sensational jewel robbery at the home of Albert K. R. Shattuck in April 1922. Mourey was captured today by French authorities.
Albert Shattuck, retired financier, and wife May return to their red brick Washington Square house following the Paris arrest of Gabriel Mourey alias Henri Ballat. Bandits hid the couple and seven servants in the wine cellar on April 2, 1922, during a raid that netted about $90,000 in jewels. a single diamond studded watch was recovered in San Francisco from a Watman who claimed Mourey gave it to her.
Dr Estanislao Severo Zeballos former Argentina ambassador to the United States died in Liverpool on October 4. He served in diplomatic posts and his death was reported from Liverpool.
Santiago Romero of the Jemez Indian Pueblo was found not guilty by instructed verdict after the jury ruled insufficient evidence to show the killing of Bernardino Fragua occurred on the Jemez reservation. Judge Neblett stated federal jurisdiction did not apply.
Denver Oct. 4 United States Senator A A Jones of New Mexico and a member of the senate finance committee bitterly attacked the Fordney McCumber tariff bill at the Western Tariff congress. He charged the new tariff association with voting contrary to its call and said he would not vote for a tariff that burdens the western people.
Washington reports the resignations of Ambassador Harvey in London and Ambassador Child in Rome have been accepted under private agreements with the Harding administration. Harvey plans to quit around year’s start. Child will not return to Rome. No other ambassadors are under similar term arrangements, and successors have yet to be discussed. Both figures played key roles in postwar diplomacy and the Harding campaign.
A. G. McGregor former Arizona resources board member told Bisbee business leaders that a federal license for a Diamond Creek Colorado River power dam is likely soon.
