President Wilson appeals to the people urging endorsement of the league covenant in November. He calls claims that article ten drags the U S into war false and says Congress retains power to declare war. The message, addressed to fellow countrymen, defends the covenant and criticizes opponents who mislead on Americanism.
Chicago witnesses allege several White Sox players manipulated performance to skew betting odds during the season and on the pennant race. They claim umpires and the scoreboard were read to time results with Cleveland and New York losses, with possible three-game Boston throw on the eastern trip. Grand jury to reconvene Tuesday.
Denver forecast shows fair skies for Monday and Tuesday with a temperature change noted. New Mexico and Arizona expect Monday and Tuesday fair weather with a slight warming in the west and southern portions.

In New York on October 3 the Associated Press notes that despite rising baseball interest, parks hosting the world series lack capacity to surpass previous attendance records. The 1916 final in Boston drew 42,620 and total series crowds peaked at 261,901 in 1912, while venues like Ebbets Field and Cleveland’s park seat about 21,663 and 20,700 respectively.
Cincinnati October 2 The Brotherhood of Railway Clerks board permanently suspends Grand Vice President J W Nelson over violations of the constitution and for his role in the unauthorized May strike on the Central of Georgia railroad. Grand VP James B Hogsed of Denver assumes charge of district seven.
Warsaw reports President Pilsudski at the northern front directing a campaign said to destroy Bolshevik forces. Captured are thousands of prisoners including the staffs of multiple armies, 42,000 prisoners, 166 guns, 960 machine guns, 1800 armored cars, seven armored trains, three airplanes, 21 locomotives, 2,500 wagons and large ammunition stores.
Tokyo reports an inquiry notes Japanese officials fear U S anti Japanese measures in California could provoke intensified exclusion elsewhere. They say negotiations protect current rights in California while broader immigration issues remain separate, and warn of rising anti American sentiment fueling friction with China and the Far East.
Dublin Castle issued a formal denial of Arthur Griffiths Sinn Fein claim that the government planned reprisals in Ireland. The statement called the accusations untrue and stated no such policy has been formulated by the British executive. Military patrols along roads near Dublin exchanged fire with attackers, wounding two soldiers.
Lieut. Arthur C. Wagner of Wayburn Saskatchewan was killed and Lieut. Com. William Merrill Corry Jr commanding officer of the aviation section of the Atlantic fleet was seriously injured when the airplane they rode in crashed to the ground on the Hartford Golf club course late today in Hartford Connecticut.
In Fort Worth Texas October 8 about 1500 bituminous coal miners from Strawn Thurber Lyra and Bridgeport area voted to accept a 25 cent per ton increase. Operators and miners conference said they would meet Monday to finalize details of the agreement.
Aberdeen shortstop Pete Turgeon of the South Dakota league was sold to the Chicago Americans for 5808 dollars payable May 15 1921 contingent on Turgeon meeting a food production condition. He will report to the White Sox for spring training next season and if he stays Chicago will provide Aberdeen with an infielder satisfactory to the local manager.
Marion Ohio October 3 Senator Harding denies reports of a rift with irreconcilable opponents over the treaty issue. He says he has a full report showing Johnson’s Los Angeles speech supports the league and the party platform. Harding plans to Fremont Ohio for a soldier memorial unveiling. Cox to attend only if new information arrives.
Chicago October 3 The Knights of Columbus board proposed giving the American Legion $5 million from a $40 million war fund to build a Washington memorial structure. It would house an auditorium for 20 000 and space for Veterans groups with ownership and governance by the Legion. The offer runs to July 1 1921 with a plan for endowment and possible reversion to the nation if the Legion dissolves.
Oklahoma City Oct. 3 The Miller brothers George L. Miller Joseph C Miller and Zach T Miller owners of the 101 Ranch near Ponca City were arrested on federal indictments charging conspiracy to defraud the United States government They are accused of obtaining deeds to thousands of acres of Indian lands adjoining their ranch under false pretenses.
Father Hugh Cummiskey administrator of the Cheyenne diocese and pastor for about forty two years died in Laramie after an operation for appendicitis. Born August 15 1854 at Towanda Pennsylvania he was ordained November 22 1877 at Scranton Pennsylvania and came to Laramie from Columbus Nebraska on February 1 1879.
Six teen carloads of beans were shipped from Mountainair last week as the Estancia valley is expected to add 450 cars and the state yield could reach 750 cars. Last year New Mexico crops totaled 623 carloads.
A rally at Helen in Valencia County drew about 1500 supporters for Hanna Putney and Laucero with 700 inside the opera house and 200 outside. The crowd cheered two and a half hours as speakers urged end to boss rule and special privilege, signaling a Democratic victory in the state.
