The Hernialo county grand jury reports Albuquerque coal prices are a public grievance needing investigation by the Interstate Commerce Commission or U S Attorney. It cites jail and courthouse sanitation issues, overdue sewer repairs, and requests improved records, clerks, and enforcement of the law.
Taft says the warm reception by Japan confirms friendly U S relations and expects continued good will. North Sydney N S Oct 2 The American auxiliary schooner yacht John R Bradley which left here in July for the Arctic regions arrived here late yesterday The Bradley landed Dr F H W Cook in command of the exploration expedition at Smiths sound The expedition expects to cross Ellamere land early in the spring and will attempt to reach the pole by way of the polar sea
Bandits robbed a passenger train last night bursting into the mail car with dynamite which ignited a fire that spread to the crowded coach. Several women and children suffered burns as gendarmes clashed with the robbers. the bandits escaped after a gunfight.
A threatened strike by International Pressmen and Assistants union caused limited disruption. Only three Chicago offices reportedly affected while New York locals indicated no trouble and expected most offices to sign the proposed agreement in Seattle.
A fog bound collision involves the Steubenville and Toronto traction cars injuring twenty passengers with a probable fatality. Milwaukee Oct 2 B F Adler president of the Federal Coal and Iron company testified in Chauncey Lloyd Jones's examination on conspiracy to defraud the government in a Colorado land deal. Adler said all entrants aimed to complete filings and pay, with no intent to evade the law. Once illegality appeared officers quit and stock sold to outsiders was recalled.
Ten of District Attorney Jerome's alienists in the Thaw trial have rendered their bills. The total is slightly in excess of $23,000.
A political sensation arose as nine of twenty one candidates named at the democratic municipal convention declined to accept the tickets. Auditor Culling and Treasurer Weiler, previously renominated, led the declinations along with four council at large candidates and two board of public service contenders. They charged autocratic delegate selection and boss rule at the convention.
