Hankow China October 1 The civilian population of Wu Chang across the Yangtze River from Hankow is without food and hundreds are reported to be perishing. Cold weather worsens suffering as no coal or firewood remains and remaining food is held by the military. The siege by Red Cantonese forces seeks surrender of northern troops. Chamber of Commerce efforts allow removal of women and children to Hankow. Sun Chuan-Fang forces rumored to advance have not alarmed Cantonese who claim Kiang situation under control.
Federal agents arrested J. W. H. Hopkins on North Broadway after raiding a Hiroldway home and finding liquor linked to sale and possession charges. Hopkins, about 50, pleaded not guilty and remained held on a $1,000 bond. In a separate case, Jeo Garcia was detained after liquor was found in his car on Tijerag avenue, with a gallon of fuel and a half gallon of gin seized and the vehicle impounded.
New York Yankees manager Miller Huggins and St Louis Cardinals boss Rogers Hornsby expect a tough World Series. Hornsby says his club is well balanced and capable, while Huggins notes the Yankees’ strength but cautions the outcome depends on performance.
Paris bar tenders report American college boys order absurdly mixed cocktails. Angus, a Beatehman at a Boulevard des Italiens cafe, says the drinks taste like a Big Bertha explosion and that classic cocktails like Gibson Martini Manhattan and Zazrac are gone.

Washington dispatch reports John Barton Payne alleging Florida officials and real estate men undermined relief efforts for the Florida storm, claiming reports of damage were belittled. He cited 3 million raised and warned the drive must continue despite withdrawal talk and conflicting statements from Miami and Richmond leaders.
Paul H. Deming, former cashier of the Bank of Jerome, was found not guilty on one charge after a 24 hour jury deliberation. He faces a second trial in Coconino County Superior Court for appropriation of about $90 000 for speculation. Trials for 29 indictments against him and four other bank officials move to Cavonian County court on a venue change.
Portales New Mexico reports 13 year old Jack Morgan son of Attorney A T Morgan had his nose broken during a football game in Portales. Injury described as serious but not life threatening. The incident drew attention to youth sports safety in the town.
An official bulletin received in Tucson shows the Metropolitan cathedral in Mexico City has paintings sculptures jewelry and tapestries valued at 30 000 000 pesos or 15 000 000 dollars after a government inventory.

Will Rogers says President Coolidge, a right nice fellow with humor, fell asleep on him after two hours of yarns in the White House. Rogers flew back to New York Friday noting Coolidge woke early and was on his way to the office by 7:30.
Angelus Temple evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson faced conflicting alibis as hotel chambermaid Agnes Callahan testified that Kenneth G. Ormiston, a former Angelus Temple radio operator, visited her and the evangelist at a Los Angeles hotel on multiple occasions. The doorman, Thomas Melville, placed McPherson at the Clark Hotel May 18 with a portfolio bearing her name, five hours before she was reported missing.
Independent leaders held a county meeting at Judge Roddy’s office to rebut attacks by Fred Wilson, Democratic chairman. Speakers Louis McRae Charles Roehl Harry Wilson and A Montoya denied demanding office or using slush funds while outlining plans for an independent movement and electing Roddy as permanent chairman with M G Benavides as secretary. A follow up gathering was set for Monday to finalize organization details.
