President Roosevelt delivers principal oration at the Lawton monument unveiling paying tribute to the general who faced foes in many hard fought fields and who finally gave his life in battle with savages in the Philippines. ceremony honors a fallen officer and local heroes.
A May day ceremony in Indianapolis honors General Henry Lawton with President Hepparvell delivering the principal oration at Monument Place. Mrs Laws On attends with her children as twenty thousand schoolchildren greet the president. Governor Hanley speaks and James Whitcomb Riley reads a poem. The address links Civil War sacrifice to modern challenges including rail regulation, taxation, and the protection of investors, urging national supervision of interstate railways, elimination of overcapitalization, and emphasis on honest management for public prosperity.
Senator Foraker greeted by a thousand at the station including two hundred colored citizens and escorted by veterans. About 5,400 heard his speech on trusts, railroads, Santo Domingo, the Panama canal, and the need for due process, constitutional safeguards, and equal rights under law.
