In Pocatello Idaho on May 29 the Portnuf grange passed a resolution requesting the resignation of Secretary of the Interior Hubert Work. The action follows Nebraska farmers' appeals about irrigation water being cut off and stands as a critique of Work's handling of western irrigation and Boise project farmers.
North Platte Valley Water Users association directors accepted the federal reclamation bureau offer to turn water into the North Platte Irrigation system. The association will cover maintenance and operation costs from July to January 1 when a joint liability district forms. Water should reach most areas in three days.
Denver police officials escort Scotty McDonald and Chester M. Cline from Kingman to Denver after Navajo county arrests on car stealing charges. McDonald, a parolee, is sought for holdups. Cline, a Colorado reformatory inmate, faces a Denver theater robbery charge. Slim Baker, jailed in San Bernardino, is also being returned to Denver with them.
A Ford coupe carrying license 22 126 collided with a wood wagon four miles east of the city late Saturday night. Three people were injured though their exact identities and injuries were not yet known. The car, speeding toward the city, rear ended the wagon, overturned it, wrecked both vehicles, and scattered wood along the road. The wagon horses were injured. A man and a woman were in the car, and a box in the back was labeled "d, BP. Grace."
Ailsa Mellon and David K. Este Bruce wed in Mount St. Albans Episcopal chapel in a simple ceremony attended by President Coolidge, Swedish royalty, and three thousand officials. The reception at Pan-American Union followed with lavish decor and a Marine Band performance.
In Chaves county near Roswell a bootlegger king’s shack was raided with 150 gallons seized. W H Taylor failed in Roswell court on a $1000 fine. Marion T Young was arrested near the courthouse with a gallon jar of heath. Roswell hotelier K C Hewett and son Alvin were fined for prohibition charges. Alvin jailed after pleading guilty to subornation of perjury.
The Rev Willard A Guy will give the baccalaureate to 121 seniors Sunday at 3 PM in the Albuquerque High School auditorium. Music by J A Bond H Curtiss and Mrs Grace Stortz MecCanna with the high school chorus. Commencement addresses by Dr Raymond Rchwegler of the University of Kansas School of Education. Diplomas to be presented by Mrs L G Rice. First and second major events open to the public. Friday night commencement requires admission by card. The class is the second largest in school history.
A souvenir war grenade exploded in the Hayes Brothers Post 636 VFW club room in Brooklyn injuring two ex soldiers and sending a third through a window into the street. Joseph King was bruised but Uninjured otherwise. Phillip Carbone picked up the grenade thinking it unloaded and triggered the fuse. Members were planning to sell poppies.
Two men were killed and three wounded in a bootlegger clash in New York City on Saturday. Dennis O'Connor, 23, an iron worker, was arrested on a homicide charge after the shooting at East 83rd Street. Salvatore Rea, a contract or's agent, died in a Brooklyn cafe.
Under Sheriff Hert L. Savage of Yavapai county left Globe with Clarence Neely in custody. Neely allegedly jumped a $500 bail bond posted by Cottonwood citizens after being charged with passing worthless checks. He was arrested for disorderly conduct, fined in police court, and taken into custody on a Prescott superior court bench warrant as he was leaving the police station.
A long distance telephone line will move from North Fourth Street to Bernalillo road or Foothill Boulevard between Albuquerque and Alameda this week. The transfer costs about 25000 dollars including underground cable from the phone office to Central Avenue and Edith Street.
A. P. Minchew, oil operator of Dallas and Denver, was acquitted of conspiring to maim his former wife Mrs. Stanley G. Smith of Denver. Prosecutors indicated the cost of Denver witnesses may prevent trial on three remaining indictments accusing him of conspiring to maim and kill.
Loren Mitchell, a stunt parachute jumper, fell half a mile during an advertising stunt over Chicago. His clothing caught fire from exploding aerial bombs, but he survived, likely due to hitting a radio aerial that cushioned his fall. He hoped to live, though seriously burned.
Property owners along East Central avenue urge turning it into a white way from the railroad tracks to the University of New Mexico.
