Governor McDonald refuses to approve the measure, citing its extravagance and vagueness. The veto halts the proposed creation or expansion of a state corporation commission and outlines concerns over costs and unclear authority.
Governor McDonald vetoes Committee Substitute for Senate Bill 423, disapproving a $7,875 salary appropriation and $14,700 for contingent expenses for the State Corporation Commission. He cites vagueness and unwarranted expense, noting actual four month costs around $4,660 and projecting six month needs near $18,000. He argues the public deserves clear purposes for funds.
In a letter to the New Mexico board of equalization Governor Williams McDonald criticizes a bill funding the corporation commission. He argues for transparency in taxpayer money and cautions against extravagance in expenditures, noting auditor estimates of 19000 for a year versus 236000 for ten and a half months.
State Auditor W. G. Sargent says he never undertook to estimate annual expenses for the new corporation commission. He explains that Governor McDonald cited figures from a clerical memo, not an official forecast, and that he was surprised to be quoted as authority on runing costs before data existed.
A federal jury in Cleveland returned a not guilty verdict for eight wallpaper manufacturers and jobbers charged with violating the Sherman act by conspiring to restrain trade. The trial Judge reported the jury had been out about four hours across twenty nine ballots. Indictments dated October 8, 1911. The key witness, Frank Hall of Weewakan New Jersey, claimed he could not buy wallpaper due to a conspiracy affecting his five and ten cent store chain.
Louisville May 24 County conventions will be held tomorrow in almost all Kentucky counties to choose delegates for the state democratic convention and the state’s 26 delegates to the national convention. Gov McCreary supports an uninstructed slate while Sen James drives for Champ Clark. James and McCreary likely to be named at large delegates. Henry Watterson, former Gov Beckham and John Mayo noted for the remaining spots.
The first witness in the John Baron Burg Taft bribery case asserts Darrow bribery is being heard by the jury. Captain Fredericks outlines proofs proposed by the prosecution. The president campaigns by auto in New Jersey primaries next Tuesday.

Trial adjourns with Monroe set to continue and Lockwood expected to testify tomorrow.
New Orleans May 24 Major P Morris leaves as the Red Cross ends field work in the Mississippi Valley relief effort. The U S army relief corps will stay about two weeks and by June 15 most of the 174000 refugees are expected to return home.
A Santa Fe dispatch reports John Baron Burg regained momentum by pushing through a permanent state fair at Albuquerque. The house approved the measure by six votes to none while debates highlighted divisions over economy and public funding among Burg Montoya Catron and others.
The House met at noon and resumed work on the eight hour bill. The Interstate Commerce Committee will hold an evening session next Wednesday to study trust legislation. Adjournment set for June 15 after long day with remarks on wartime expenditures.
President Taft campaigned through New Jersey declaring he has more than 570 delegates for the Chicago convention and vows to stop Roosevelt from a third term. He criticized Roosevelt’s leadership and emphasized party unity while addressing crowds in Jersey City Plainfield Hoboken and nearby towns.
Camden May 24 Colonel Roosevelt closes his second day of campaigning in New Jersey declaring we will beat the politicians next Tuesday. He boasted of his Pennsylvania showing and predicted the same outcome in New Jersey as he toured the state in four swings today.
Colonel Roosevelt travels from Atlantic City to Camden then Trenton for final speech amid large enthusiastic crowds. He rebukes Taft on a referendum plan and constitutional amendments while mixing politics with other topics. An auto accident injures a boy in Trenton as crowds surge near his car.
Senator La Follette told a ble crowd in New York that he is the winner and the logical candidate for the Republican nomination. He toured central New Jersey venues including Lakewood Asbury Park Long Branch Red Bank and Paterson and rejected being a stalking horse for Taft or Roosevelt.
Dr Chester Powell founder and chief owner of the Fresno Republican died in Los Angeles after weeks of illness. Powell was a political leader and a major figure in central California business and press circles.
David H. Wilson editor of Municipal Facts official Denver city paper died three hours after finishing this week’s edition. He returned home to rest when a hemorrhage struck him and he passed away within minutes. He held many key posts in Denver journalism and suffered from tuberculosis. Survived by his wife, his mother and four brothers.
Mrs Jack Cudahy appealed to Chief Griffin for protection as Morris J Condory, recently arrested in Pasadena for attacking her, is in Kansas City. Condory is in the general hospital here and will be detained until the police complete their investigation.
George Carr pleads guilty to bigamy in Spokane and receives a penitentiary sentence of one to five years. His most recent marriage was to Miss Margaret Barclay of Coeur d'Alene Idaho, whom he wed last November.
A major blaze in Lebanon Junction Kentucky wiped out thirteen business buildings and three residences along the town’s main street. Two men, Charles Mulins and a Black man, were injured by falling timbers but survived. Estimated loss ranges from two hundred thousand to two hundred fifty thousand dollars.
Important measure passes the Senate without amendment by a 22 to 2 vote. The bill concerns official bonds and awaits executive approval or veto.
Santa Fe May 24 The New Mexico Senate passed House Substitute for House Bill 41 known as the Spiess bond bill. Senator Barth protested at length but paired and could not vote against it. The measure authorizes three bond series A B and C with C aiding Santa Fe and Grant counties and backed by state credit and federal land. Barth sought amendments, all rejected, bill passed 20 to 2. The cap-itol custodian commission bill also passed over Barth’s resistance.
The House resumed calm proceedings after a stormy session. New bills were introduced including public bridges, road supervision, rail passenger fares, and convict labor on roads. A public drinking water bill saw a split committee with the majority bill approved 28 to 19. The artesian well bill, passed by the Senate, was sent to the House for committee of the whole consideration.
