Baku May 24 The governor of Baku Prince Nakachidze was assassinated at three o'clock this afternoon by a bomb thrown into his carriage. A lieutenant and a bystander were killed, the coachman fatally injured, and the assassin’s actions are part of a yearlong wave of government official assassinations across Russia and Caucasus regions with multiple cities reporting bomb and gun violence.
Winona Lake Ind May 24 The general assembly approved reports on missions and Sunday school work and endorsed a plan to raise a 10 million dollar permanent fund to fund annuities for aged ministers and their families. A committee was ordered to establish the fund which now totals about 1.659 million. About 24 annually for 30 years would yield an annuity of 5600 with potential growth to 1000 after thirty years. 520 ministers stand to gain. Denver Colo May 24 M B E Walley a miner and J J Walley relative were killed by a blast near Colfax and Emerson with nitroglycerin suspected. Fragments found blocks away and windows broken.
Washington May 24. Clarence Whitman head of the New York Merchants Association pressed the president for a government investigation into Equitable Life affairs or a recommendation to Congress on insurance legislation. Officials note general inquiries have occurred, but no specific action has been taken by the president. Commissioner Garfield weighs government authority to probe without Congress action.
William F. King former NY Merchants' Association president says President Roosevelt favors naming a national committee to probe the Hyuttable Life Assurance Society. A letter paragraph states the department of commerce and labor is examining whether the government has power to act.
Chicago May 24 Barney Oldfield escaped death today when a tire exploded on his car sending it through a fence. He was picked up unconscious with no broken bones reported though badly battered after the crash at the track.
The Philadelphia gas lease dispute reaches the courts as Mayor Weaver and ousted directors exchange roles. A temporary injunction blocks the new directors, Weaver asserts he remains mayor and prepares to personally oversee urgent department actions. Sanders Senator Penrose and ward leaders convene with Durham to coordinate strategy.
New York report states William Zeigler capitalist and promoter of Aretix exploration died this morning at his Norton Conn country home after a night of unconsciousness. An invalid since a runaway accident last October, he was born in 1543 and built his fortune in the baking powder business.
Secretary of War Taft, introduced as temporary chairman, drew strong applause at the Ohio Republican state convention in Columbus as delegates settled committees and a Roosevelt friendly platform was drafted. Taft’s speech and the railroad rate plank drew cheers while the crowd favored Governor Herrick’s administration. Taft to preside over the convention as deliberations resume next morning.
Col Campbell a Civil War veteran ex mayor ex postmaster and ex revenue collector in Austin dies this morning of apoplexy in El Paso Texas. In Butte Montana a miner Michael Haggerty shoots his wife wounds their son and kills himself amid jealousy rumors.
In Marin county San Rafael, Edwin Stephens shot his wife and five children, two surviving youngsters likely to die, then shot himself after firing on a milkman. Neighbors found the family with revolver wounds across all beds in the home. No clear motive./or theory suggests sudden insanity.
