The president challenges the notion that any federal agency can remain autonomous from executive control. He argues that executive supervision is essential for coherent policy and accountability across the government.
President Coolidge faced two stubborn issues this week Alaska patronage and the Shipping Board clash with the White House. He warned that filling federal posts by Alaskan factionists would force nonresidents into high office if factions do not reconcile, a move he may resist by appointing Americans from outside Alaska.
In San Fernando Pampanga province near Manila a dance hall riot left four dead two policemen and two civilians and wounded 19 others including 17 civilians and two constabulary members. The disturbance began over a quarrel between two men over a woman and spread quickly prompting a special constabulary detachment from Manila.

In Flint Michigan on May 23 a Pere Marquette Passenger train struck an automobile just inside city limits killing six occupants. Victims include Mrs. Agnes Jeffries, daughters Ruth and Flors, Mia Fay Mead and her infant son, Velma Mead, half sister of the infant's father.
Five armed men robbed socialite Misa Virginia Poehlman, daughter of August Poehlmann, millionaire florist and former Morton Grove mayor, of jewelry valued at 14700 dollars and stole the car she and her escort were riding in after a Gabaret party.
Chicago reports that Catherine Scott testified Russell Scott urged her to raise $5,000 to win his sanity ruling and avoid execution for the murder of a drug clerk. She said a state official payoff of $100 weekly was proposed, and that efforts included trips to Detroit and appeals to Michigan clubwomen, while a new alienist exam ended with a sane ruling and a return to hanging if sane.
In Sulphur Springs Governor Miriam A. Ferguson challenged her opponent Moody to resign if she trails by one vote in the primary, and Moody accepted in San Antonio. The exchange sparked a heated gubernatorial race in Texas with a dramatic vow and counteroffer.
At Wenecott grade crossing ten miles north of Fort Madison Iowa a car carrying Mrs G Stansbury her three year old daughter and two boys Robert Lawse seven and J Nell was struck by a Chicago Burlington and Quincy passenger train. Mrs A J Tawne and her son Thomas eight were seriously injured in the crash and taken to a Fort Madison hospital.
Santa Fe May 23 No further details of the killing of Geronimo Jaramillo could be learned here Sunday night. District Attorney David Chaves had not returned from his investigation. Meager reports say Jaramillo was shot by a man named Gonzales Friday night at El Rito. He was survived by a widow and several children.
Master Plumbers Association signals opposition to a plan letting New Mexico Construction Company handle sewer connections for about 306 homes in University Heights. They argue plumbers should perform the connections though bid competition and costs are disputed, noting earlier city bids and protests to Mayor Tingley.
Havana police say orders were given for tight watch on the district near the U S embassy and consular offices after reports of a bomb blast in Buenos Aires linked to Sacco and Vanzetti. They note no serious danger is believed present.

Frederick Raabe and his 22 year old daughter Evelyn, paralayzed since birth, were found dead in their Brooklyn apartment from gunshot wounds after a gas incident. Police say Raabe killed his daughter and then himself, citing inability to support and care for her since his wife’s death. A note left near Evelyn mentioned mental agony and funds.

No trace of her body was found despite exhaustive ocean-floor inquiries and patrols along the shore. A sense of vigil lingered as hymn singing echoed between dance halls and the sea.
American mining man C. C. Braden and engineer Gallagher were captured by Mexican bandits and held for six thousand pesos ransom. Consul Yost at Torreon said troops were ordered to pursue the bandits. Braden owned the Texano mine at Descobridora, Durango, and resided there for three years.
Robbers entered the Newark shoe store in Denver pried open the safe and escaped with 200 dollars. A second robbery at Shoe Mart yielded about 150 dollars. Police detained a man calling himself Red Smith from Kansas City after two attempted holdups. victims were struck during the attempts.
May 23 report from Chicago states Mildred Kavanaugh a 21 year old daughter of a Pontiac farmer is sought after the murder of Frank Cremaldi. A card found on Cremaldi’s body with five bullet holes pointed to the missing woman and led police to her address and phone number.
The national safety council reports a drop in home accident deaths for January through April 1926 compared with 1925 based on a survey of 100 American elites. In April 51 people died daily at home, down from 62 in March.
