President Taft writes to Dr H B Friz zel, principal of the school, calling election to the Hampton trustees an honor and pledging to contribute to the continued success of the Negro and Indian education institution.
Dunkirk New York May 28 reports Union Pacific placed an order for one hundred engines with the American Locomotive Company to be built at the Schenectady and Brooks plants. Des Moines May 23 a Negro man killed his white wife and then himself after she refused to return to him and their two children Ottumwa death tragedy.
Allan Line steamer Mongolian from Glasgow reached Halifax on May 23 with details of three days held by ice off St Johns Newfoundland. Fore peak flooded and one paddle blade broken, the vessel endured a perilous passage before docking with the full account of the escape from the ice.
A Great Northern ore train derailed between Helena and Great Falls as the Missouri River rose and softened the track bed. Eighteen ore cars toppled into the river. Brakeman Flager was killed and Engineer Stephen seriously injured. The passenger train behind was stopped in time.

Sixty thousand people attended the aero plane race meeting at the new aerodrome in Juvisy France on May 23. A high wind marred the contest. Leon Deligranke piloted ten miles for the one thousand dollar prize but did not use his own machine, so the award is deemed to go to him with no other competitors in the event.
Huge Colo May 23 Edward Pay non Weston veteran pedestrian walks to the Pacific coast will leave there at 4 oclock in the morning for the week. He expects to reach Denver at 6 pm Tuesday stopping at Bennett 72 miles distant over Monday night Weston rested at the hotel and said he is in better condition than at the start and expects to make good time through the mountains.
The battleship Danton remains under construction as launching stalled yesterday due to a defective keel and the heavy weight causing hull drift. An accident attributed to the shore facility’s handling and deficient practice is cited.

Nine devotional services marked the Presbyterian general assembly meeting in Denver with the central event a sermon by moderator Dr James M Barkely at Central Presbyterian Church. A major parade plan for Sunday school children drew thousands and a Home and foreign missions rally filled the afternoon with Rev Charlie Bretzel of New York addressing laboring men on the subject and labor.
Mr Stetzel chaired five meetings in as many churches to promote Christian education. Central church hosted the main talk on strengthening Presbyterian colleges to rival non sectarian schools. Other sessions supported young people organizations Presbyterian board of education systematic beneficiaries and Sabbath observance with applause for the committee report.

The Geological Survey released a list of permissible explosives after tests to reduce coal mine fatalities. Twelve manufacturers submitted twenty nine explosives. six firms had seven teen accepted after four tests in a 100 by ax foot steel gallery with fire damp air and coal dust mixtures. Dr Joseph A Helmes directed the tests.
Port Townsend Wash May 23 Japanese training squadron comprising cruisers Aso and Soya entered Puget Sound with a 21 gun salute from Fort Worden. Major Goernon greeted the visitors aboard and extended welcome to Puget Sound. The ships were to depart for Tacoma at dawn.
Inaugural Burlington Northern train runs from St Louis at 9 PM with no coach changes. Schedule lists Kanad City 4:30 AM Monday, Billings 7:50 PM Tuesday, Spokane 4:35 PM Wednesday, Portland 7:30 AM, Seattle 4:30 AM, Tacoma 8:30 AM Thursday.
Mexico City May 23 Consul Benor Martin De Sala of Shanghai arrives on a tour to boost Latin American and West Indies trade with the Orient. He has lived eighteen years in the Far East and will visit South Central American republics during the mission.
Arthur Crane aged 7 and Jon Crosby aged 9 from Saginaw Michigan arrived in Toledo after traveling over 5600 miles with no money. They left Saginaw last December by way of Los Angeles and Cincinnati before reaching Toledo and plan to return home.
