Democratic and Republican objections block Rhode Island Senator's bid to limit debate on tariff. The move aimed to trigger a date for a vote, drawing partisan resistance.
Washington May 22 Senator Aldrich urged a final tariff vote with amendments as Bailey faced repeated objections and a string of quorum calls. Bailey accused of wrongs as Bailey pressed for a tax amendment and observed a tense clash while senators argued to adjourn and restore order amid persistent calls for a quorum.
In Washington on May 23 the senate did not vote on any subject. The entire session focused on speech making while the lumber schedule remained under discussion.
Controversy pitted free lumber advocates led by Senator McCumber against lumber state senators Elkins Scott and Heyburn seeking higher duties. They debated forest depletion, national supply, and protection versus free lumber as the Senate adjourned at 3 04 p m with no votes on the tariff bill.
Washington May 12 The iniquitous system known as the protective tariff is denounced as extortion in a senate speech by Mr McLaurin who urges customs duties only for revenue and calls for strict economy. He argues the US should abandon the Philippine policy to save 160000000 military expenditures and opposes private pension bills favoring a civil war based approach to veterans claims.

Four masked robbers halted the Union Pacific Overland Limited a few miles west of Omaha just before midnight. Laurel Massachusetts May 22 an aged demented negro confessed God ordered him to dig 121 graves at night beside the local cemetery. He had worked on the plot for nearly three weeks at night triggering intense community excitement.
J D Nixon aged 32 died after drinking carbolic acid in his hotel Larsen room. A Vallejo woman who loved him telephoned the landlady claiming Nixon threatened suicide in a letter. Police found Nixon’s body and letters including one to Dr John H Nixon. a relative in New Orleans and a possible brother, Joseph R Nixon of the Southern Pacific Railway, in Berkeley.
On the North Western passenger train from Council Bluffs to Sioux City three men beating their way on the tender fought aboard at fifty miles per hour. One man was pushed from the tender and crushed while two others overpowered another suspect in the cab. The injured man was captured by the engineer and fireman and turned over to officers. Names given as Jack Myatt and Ven Bloan. the latter held for murder. The incident occurred at Crescent, Iowa.
A. R. Garretson of Cedar Rapids Iowa was re elected grand president of the Order of Railway Conductors at Boston. Oakland California was named as a candidate for the 1411 convention. Chief Conductors Curth of the Mexico delegation left for home on urgent telegram about a settlement on a leaned Harrittuy line being overturned and conductors facing discrimination with a hinted strike if enforcement is needed.
Oklahoma City May 22 Fearing another lynching Pontiac county officers at Ada Okla removed J W Scribner Daniel Scribner and Max Lee to the Marshall County jail at Madill The prisoners face murder charges in the killing of Zeke Putman near Ada and a brother of Beribner ten days earlier They will be returned to Ada Monday for trial Four whites were lynched at Ada a few weeks ago.
New York May 2 The mining expert Joehannys Hammond will be offered the post of minister to Ortie at a conference with President Taft in Washington Monday according to The Herald. Friends here think he will accept the post.
Mexico City May 22. Eneor Joan Haranda a newspaper man soldier political leader and cabinet member died here yesterday afternoon. Sener Baranda represented Campeche in the chamber of deputies and was among President Diaz's closest friends.
