The Peninsular and Oriental Egypt sank off Ashant Island after a fog collision with the French cargo steamer News of the disaster arrived via the Seine which rescued survivors. The Egypt bound London Bombay carried 44 passengers and 290 crew with at least ten passengers and eighty crew missing. The collision occurred 22 miles from the lighthouse as lifeboats were lowered and chaos followed with many passengers and crew lost at sea.
