President has 948 delegates who are instructed or favorable to him, manager declares as the party gears toward nomination with Butler’s fate noted in late breaking dispatches.
Jose A. Baca, 48, lieutenant governor of New Mexico, died at his Las Vegas home after a five day illness from pneumonia. He was a lifelong Democrat, former state senator candidate in 1920, and presided over the state senate in 1925. Survived by a widow, one son, four daughters. Funeral anticipated Tuesday with many state officers expected. He owned a large sheep ranch at Pendaries, New Mexico.
Washington May 18 William fuller, manager of President Cool idge preconvention campaign, reports 948 delegates elected or favored to back Cool idge at the Republican national convention. The 665 needed. Hiram Johnson credited with 15 delegates and 2 from Tilinoiw. La Follette awarded 2% of Wisconsin’s 25 delegates. Delegates pledged or favored listed by state, with many still to be chosen.
Mrs Catherine Smith mother of Governor Alfred E. Smith died in Brooklyn after weeks with pneumonia. The governor, then in Absecon NJ, learned of her death and did not accompany her. She was 72 at birth, widow of Alfred Smith, and survived by twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Missoula May 18 reports say absence of wind helped crews confine a 2 500 acre forest fire near Whitefish to burned areas. Kalispell security notes indicate flames are controlled with little danger unless wind shifts. Firefighters also report favorable conditions in Idaho s Kootenai and Kaniksu forests as fires there slow under control.
Canton May 18 French aviator Dois y on a round the world flight arrives from Hanoi in Tongking French Indo China about 500 miles from Canton. He faced bad weather and flew at a high altitude. He plans to depart for Shanghai next day if conditions improve and is welcomed by a large crowd. Sun Yat Sen held a reception at the aviation field amid reports of his death.
Washington May 18 leaders of a national farm group urged enactment of the McNary Haugen farm relief bill to save agriculture from impending ruin. Signers include officers of the national grange national livestock producers association and farm bureau federations in Town Minnesota and Indiana.

Seven persons were killed in a head-on crash between two Seaboard Air Line trains near Carey, seven miles from Raleigh. Two brakemen a news butcher and a Black woman passenger died instantly. A Black passenger and seven crew members were injured. A separate collision between a Raleigh Hamlet line train and the Florida Limited caused additional casualties.
Troy hospital reports Chicago White Box manager John Evera had an appendicitis operation this afternoon. Doctors say his condition is good and he is resting comfortably.
